hi i own lyman manual 48 edition and all i have is data for 173 and 170 gr cast bullets for 3030,but not a single word about 120 grain cast in it

Yes it is quite in order to use XMP5744 at the low levels.
XMP5744 is a rather special and unique product.
It's a fast burning powder, and can actually be categorized as a
handgun/fast-rifle powder. It's a double base "hybrid" powder having the
typical chemical composition of handgun powders i.e. 20% NG - and the
geometry of a typical extruded single perforated rifle powder.
This makes the powder very ignitable, as well as bulky, which makes it ideal
for low loading density applications, such as reduced loads on bottle neck
rifle calibers, and low performance "straight case" designs, such as the old
blackpowder calibers i.e 45-70 etc. The powder is insensitive to powder
position and there is no need for "fillers".

Although this is a powder is recommended for reduced/low performance loads,
it cannot simulate the efficiency of complete burn, of blackpowder at these
very low performance levels.
It still is a modern, high-density, smokeless powder, with limitations
regarding efficiency at very low chamber pressures. With nitro-cellulose
based "Modern" powders, the burn rate and pressure are directly
proportional.

This means that some level of unburnt powder will be present constituting
the remainder of some of the powder granules. This cannot be improved with
primers or crimp etc, the only way to eliminate this, is an increase in
chamber-pressure, which will also increase the velocity.

The 30/30 never has much data for the lighter lead bullets. The lightest bullet listed in last years free pamplet is a 152gr RN from 20.3grns 5744 to 22.5grns of 5744. I bet that data would work with a lighter bullet. Some of the old ones had data down to a 115gr bullet but they didn't even have 5744 then. BM

I tried 5744 a coupla' years ago and didn't have very good results using it in reduced loads. Kept leaving unburnt powder in the barrel. Works great when used in full charges. Kinda' acted like a pressure friendly powder.
