Find some Speer TNT 50 grain bullets and go to Hogdon's website and pick the powder showing the best performance.....go kill a lot of prairie dogs!

I used H-414 because I had it....H-380 is a fine powder too!

I don't know what you are planning to shoot, but my Savage Model 11 22-250 shoots 1/2" groups all day with the following:

#1365 Sierra 55 gr. SBT
39.0 grs. Ramshot Big Game
Remington Brass
CCI BR-2 Primers

+1 on the H-380! I use it in two different loads:

50 gr Berger Match
41 gr H-380
WW brass
WLR Primer

This I use for coyotes in the winter (and is near max, so be careful to work up to this load if you're considering it).

50 gr Sierra Blitz Kings
39.5 gr H-380
WW brass
WLR Primer

This I use for PD/varmints/crows, anything that needs to be imploded in the spring/summer!

I've also been told IMR4895 is a good powder, bought a lb of it but haven't tried it out yet.

My Savage BVSS liked 38.0 grs of H-380 and a 50 gr Vmax with Federal match primers. If I raised the powder charge, it would open the groups up.

When I swapped it for a McGowen prefit barrel, I could go up to 40 grs same powder and bullet, and the groups shrank.

You may have to play with it, and break in the barrel. Some of the factory Savage barrels run a bit rough inside and copper up pretty fast. Mine did.

I would go with the 50 grainers, maybe Noslers.

Powder could be Varget or RL-7. Both should make you happy.

My 22-250 likes 42.0 of W-760, Remington 55 HPPL, CCI-200 and Remington brass for 3700 fps and 3/4" groups from a 24" light sporter barrel (Shilen #2).

Since I loaded for my 22-250 in volume, I used H380 so's I could dump powder direct into the cases. I also used 55gr bullets for the slightly better retained velocity and energy.

If you're shooting groundhogs, then you can use the primo bullets; if you're shooting Pdogs, use the cheapest bulk bullets you can find. (avoid fmj's) Some are amazingly accurate and the difference between 1000 Horns or C/L's and buying high dollar bullets by the hundred can buy a lot of gas.

38 grains of H380 is the standard load.

I've had good luck with 38.5gr H380, or w760 with the 52gr sierra matchkings. Either load will shoot them in one hole.

have a Savage 22.250 Take off barrel I picked up off the classifieds here or on 24...

it digests about anything you want to feed it and shoots them into tiny little bitty holes...

even with Bulk Mid South Varmint bullets..and FMJs...

so pick you poison and have fun..

My 'go-to' initial test load for all 22-250s is the same as Stepchild 2's, i.e. 35.5 gr 4895, either H or IMR, under the Sierra 53-gr flat-base Match bullet or any handmade Benchrest-type 50-55 gr bullet like Berger & Cook used to make. It's been my experience that if it won't shoot this load then it probably won't shoot any other load either.

This of course is only a starting point but will sometimes indicate if a rifle is worth the effort or not. Good luck!
Regards, Joe
