I bought a pound of R-17, and would like to try it with 250 grain Woodleigh PP bullets and CCI 200 primers. Does anyone have a load that I can try?

---- I know this is asking a lot, but I have these components and would like to try the combination. Or, how about 286 grain Norma Plastic Points? I traded for a coffee can full of those, and have a lot left over to use for practice. thanks.

I believe that you will have better luck using the RL-17 with the 286-grain Normas. The 250-grain bullets go very well with RL-15/N-203B.

Try 57 grains of the RL-17 with the 286-grain bullets.

Try 59 grains of the RL-17 with the 250-grain bullets.

The velocity may not be maximum, but I believe you will do well in the accuracy department.

RL 17 is being touted, by the manufacturer, as having a "similar" burn rate to 4350. Their info does not say which 4350. Since RL 17 is new, I doubt you will find any load info for it in the 9.3 x 62, but 4350 seems to be a regular w/ the heavier bullet. Waters says it's too slow and got his best results w/ RL 15 and the 286g. Hope this helps.

After looking again, the maker says RL 17 has a burn rate similar to IMR 4350.

Walter,

I ran a quick load run using the Woodleigh 250 PP and RL 17...

For what it is worth, the Rl17 looks like it should do very well...Loading up to published SAAMI specs of around 57000, 66 grs of RL-17 gets you about 2600 FPS.. out of a 20 inch barrel.

So...you could start to work up from a few grains below that and see how she goes...

Good luck.

I e-mailed Hornady yesterday and they sent me load info. 9.3 x 62, 286g, Horn case, WLRM primer. Their case length of 2.484 seems to be an error based on my research and the diagram of the case has the length of 2.431--which I believe IS correct.
MAX loads-------Varget--57.5g--2300 fps
Win 748-60.4g--2400 fps
RL 15---58.1g--2300 fps
No load data for RL 17 or 4350
Please let us know if you can get anywhere near 60g of anything other than ball powder in this case. I doubt it.

FWIW, John Barnsness has an article out there that takes Varget up to 60.5 grains with 250 grain Accubonds at a little over 2600 fps. My personal load is 60.0 grains and it comes in at right around 2600 depending on elevation (I'm at sea level now so it's a little slower).

When I first got the rifle I squeezed a near max load of H4350 (66gr) behind a 286 grain bullet. It shot fine, but when I checked some loaded cartridges a few weeks later, they got longer!! The compressed charge moved the bullet forward. I reduced the load a little, crimped the bullet, and went hunting. I was short on time and could not find other components.

The next hunt is for hogs. I have a starting point, and need some time behind the rifle to see how it goes.

Loaded some tonite. First, RL 15 meters great. Loaded 270g Speers w/ 58g at 3.30 col. There IS room for more powder. I compared these w/ both Swift and Horn 286g slugs and the 286s are going to consume a good deal more case capacity, AND a LOT more case capacity if seated at the cannalure.

I tried a few cartridges today to check out the suggestions. At 60 grains of RL-17, the primer indentation looked rounded, just like my reduced loads that I use for practice. I went a little higher, and this combination seems to work in my rifle (standard disclaimers apply).

63.0 grain RL-17
250 grain Woodleigh PP
Lapua cases
CCI 200 primers.
The overall length is to the canelure, with a slight crimp (Now that I sit down to type this, the OAL number escapes me). This loads fills the case completely, and any more powder will be compressed. Temperature was 40F, raining, and the wind was strong enough to blow my hat off, so I called it a day. I did not have a chronograph, so I do not have velocity.

I like this combination so far. I will shoot some more in the next few months to check accuracy and trajectory to 200 yards -- just in case a pig or deer comes out at long range. You never know. Thanks everyone for the input.

I too have run the 250 Accubond up to 60.5 gr of Varget. I settled on 60 gr for 2606 fps from my 24" Pacnor barrel. Accuracy is very good with 30 ES and 6 SD.

I've yet to try Rel 17 in my 9.3x62 instead saving it for my 6.5x47 with 140's.

I recently had good luck with Alliant Power Pro 2000MR. Graf brass, CCI primers, 63.5 grains, seated to the cannalure. Velocity was 2525 consistently out of my 20.5" barrel. Accuracy was right at MOA.

2000 MR has a burn rate similar to R15, it produces very high velocities in 308 and 338 Federal with excellent accuracy.

My Simson 9.3X62 has a 24" barrel and here are a few loads

ADI 2208 (Varget) 59 gr Lapua Mega 286gr 2418fps 1"- 3 shot group (Mild load - primer re-seating like a new case)

ADI 2208 (Varget) 61 gr Nosler Bal Tip 250 gr 2570 fps
ADI 2208 61 gr Barnes TSX 250 gr 2560 fps

Both these loads are very mild and I could go up another 2 grains very safely. I have tried AR 2206 (an obsolete powder - very similar to IMR 3031) but I prefer to use ADI 2208 / Varget. I stopped trying other loads with the 250s as I tend to shoot the 286 & 320s more.

I'm glad you got good results with that RE-17 load but in my 9.3x62 RE-17 would be too slow. Varget is the powder and over 60 grains you are into compressed loads with it.
