Has anyone tried using 40 grain bullets in the faster 9" twist ?

I thought I was ready to purchase a new gun after looking at CZ, Rem, Win, Sav, Ruger, Browning, and Tikka and for money on a Syn/SS gun & accuracy the Tikka was hands down, what I decided on, but they have switched their twist from 12" to a 9" twist so now I can't decide if this will work for me. Beretta states no changes can be made to a different twist.

This gun I plan on reloading only the 40gr Nosler BT bullets, I currently load these just over 3,700 fps with a 12" twist to use on mainly coyote's & target shooting out to 350yds.

The 9" twist should not be a problem at all.

No problems from my Remmy PSS with 40s.

Are you sure the Tikka isn't a 1-8 twist? The Sako 75s now have a 1-8 twist and I thoght the Tikkas were the same. FNMauser

fnmauser, you are correct, it is a 8" twist.

they work great in my Savage and a Remington with a one in 9 twist...

stay clear of the Hornady SPSXs though...

the one in 9 twist will vaporize them at normal 223 speeds about 12 to 18 inches out of the barrel...

It will be no problem at all, I use Nosler 50 gr BTs in my Tikka but that has the "lazy twist" in it, my friend has one with the 8" twist and uses the same bullets with same results. I am considering going to the 40s.

The only problem we have encounted with the Tikkas is, we have to load to the mag and not the lans because the mags are to short or the bullets are to long,(which ever way you wanna look at it) with the BT on them, HPs and SP are a different story, miles of room.

I have toyed with the idea of using the Medium mag to get the length but its abit marginal in holding the 223 case.

If you do want to load to the lans its still possible but you will just have to put each bullet in one at a time, but as I found out on the weekend, in doing that quickly, the BT bullets can be a bit tricky to get in, if you firing them at a range tho one at a time shouldnt be an issue.

They seem to work.

I appreciate everyones help, I have great sucess with the 40gr in .223, alot of money to spend to not get results a person wants.

Runas, Thanks, I have 25:06 in T3 and don't have problem with OAL to the lands and still use clip but as you say it could be different story with .223

sccm1, would you mind posting your results when you do some testing, I would love to find out your results.
Been thinking about it, those 40s will be spining real ouick, coming out of that barrel,
I have hard speeds of up to 150,000 rpm out of a 12" twist, so I wouldnt push them too quick or you may find out what "seadog" was talking about with them too.

Yes, I will post results, being diferent gun I will rework load all the way up to where I was, your right may have to back off with the faster twist.
