richyb30/30 lead into a 308?
Has anyone loaded up a 30 cal flat nose 170gr speer bullet into a 308 or a 30-06? would the increase in speed just make the bullet blow up on impact?

Don EdwardsLoading it into a 30/06 doesn't necessarily increase the speed....you can load the '06 down a bit and get great results.

craigsterIf they're 30-30 bullets keep your velocities in the 30-30 range and they'll work just fine.

richybim not wanting 30/30 velocities. im guessing they woulnt work out good at higher speeds then?

plainsman456The 150 grain Winchesters will blow out the off side of a deer at 135 yards in spectacular fashion when shot out of a 308.
It was quite a sight for me,makes you wonder if they would make a good varmint bullet in other 30's.

Yes I have done just this when reloading for a friend using a 30-06 on red deer. He purchased a box of these flat nosed bullets by mistake but they sure dropped the deer he shot with them. Ruined a bit of meat as they do blow up quicker at the 30-06 velocities but he never lost anything he hit.

Alberta CanuckI have used the 170 gr. flat nose in both the 7.5 Swiss and the .30-06 cartridges. They work well. Have not tried them in the .308 but see no reason they wouldn't work well there also.
Edited to add: Forgot I've actually used CIL .30-30 flat points for years in the .308 Winchester .... though I repointed them in a die to reshape them into a semi-spitzer point.
They are still the same basic soft lead core, thin jacketed bullet though, and they work just great.

390ishI load them all the time in 308 and 30-06, but only as a subsonic load.
