went to the range today and made up some trial loads with "hunter" for my /06AI and 180 interbonds. i was more than pleased with the results. very accurate and excellent velocity. does anyone have any real world experiences on how temperture affects this particular powder? i,ve heard different things about ball powders and temperture, but would like to know about hunter. my esteemed mentor in houston, tells me that you are supposed to use magnum primers with ball powders, which i didn't, but i don't know about that. any experiences on that would be appreciated also. b h

Hey bh Did a quick search and found several topics that talked about this. So my "esteemed" (sounds like something that comes off of very fresh dog doo-doo on a cold night) opinion is that you should use magnum primers. Now you need to make that trade of your 210M's for my 215M's, but the value of the 215M's just went up. (Just had to repeat that "esteemed" joke) ____________________________________ There are those who would misteach us that to stick in a rut is consistency - and a virtue, and that to climb out of the rut is inconsistency - and a vice. - Mark Twain | Chinese Proverb: When someone shares something of value with you and you benefit from it, you have a moral obligation to share it with others. ___________________________________

http://www.ramshot.com/powders/ Some things I think I remember from reading about these powders: -made in Belgium (Bofors?) -developed for machine guns -temp. insensitive properties (like RL-15) -anti copper fouling agent (ditto) -easier to ignite than Olin Ball powders Note: The above may contain inaccuracies. Corrections would be appreciated.

Here is what Ramshot say about the use of magnum primers.

I see the Ramshot powders are advertized as "double based". From their website:
I know that Vihtavuori's 500 series are double based. Does anybody know which other powders utilize this technology?? And, VV's 500 series have acquired a reputation (anecdotal or not?) for being hard on barrels. The talk is about rough and excessively eroded throats. Is this an attribute of all double based powders?? - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... i really didn't know that 560 is hard on the barrels. this will make me work a little harder with the "hunter". actually i got the same velocity with the hunter and 180 interbonds with less powder and for sure less felt recoil. with the hunter it is like a sharp jab rather than a long hard push. i'll need to confirm and play with seating depth etc., MAYBE even try mag. primers as my "esteemed" mentor has suggested

Guys, don't panic just yet. Don't forget that my evidence for potential excessive throat erosion is anecdotal. I don't know if there is any hard evidence for this negative effect. I searched AR last night, and there is no clear statement that establishes double based powders as a culprit in this respect. Besides, with many of the powders we use on a daily basis, we may not even be aware whether they are double based or not. - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... The Alliant reloader series is also double based. So are several of the Accurate numbers and most of the Norma numbers. Don't believe everything you read about barrel erosion on the internet. JMO, Dutch. Life's too short to hunt with an ugly dog.
