I would like to try some 1000 yards matches this summer. What loads should I try? The rifle has a 26 inch 1:11 twist barrel. Thanks, Scott.

Try 175 Sierra Matchkings, pushed as fast as you comfortably can. Varget, 4064, and a few others work well in the powder department.

If Varget or IMR 4064 doesn't work try H4350 between 48.0 gr. and 48.7 in Winchester brass and CCI BR-2 primer with the 175 MatchKing. Another bullet you might look at is the 155 Sierra Palma, try Vith. N540 about 47.0 gr. to 47.4 gr. again in Winchester brass, and with this powder use a Fed. 210M primer. Either bullet will still be supersonic at 1000 yds. Shoot Safe, Shoot Straight........RiverRat

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=ba5ftk%24oe3%241%40grapevine.wam.umd.edu Bart Bobbitt says: "..Sierra 168s with the best accuracy across virtually all the top quality barrels as well as factory target barrels has remained the same for over 40 years. 40 or 41 grains of IMR4064 with a good uniform mild match primer seated in a proper full-length sized case with just enough neck tension on the bullet to hold it in place for rapid fire. No other powder with the 168s in a .308 has been used as successfully in winning and record setting; there must be some reason. .."

Scott, I dont see it mentioned here alot but I prefer the 178 Amax over the matchkings. Under 300 yards it is a tie but past 300 the better wind drift of the Amax kicks in. Personally I have found the .308 tends to run out of steam at the 800 yard mark, mine will still hold 1 moa or slightly under but jumping to 1000 I cant consistently stay under 14-16 inches. Im using a Rem 700 VSSF bedded in a McMillan A3 stock, 45gr of Varget and Fed 210 primers for about 2735fps. Good luck and be careful, long range is damn addicting.

Clark, The 168 is a great bullet but not for 1000 yard shooting, it won't make it supersonic.

The difference between the 168 gr. MK and the 175 gr. MK is the 175 holds it high BC. The 168 gr. bullet's BC changes as much as four times while in flight. Past 600 yds., it drifts more in the wind than a comparable 175 gr. MK load. E
