Im not sure what caliber I should choose. Im between the 260 Rem, and 284 Win. They both offer very high BC bullets, but since Im using it in a short Rem action, OAL of the cartridge is a problem. 2.800 For the 260 123grain scenar 142grain scenar And the 284 162grain A-max 175grain Match King What do you guys think is the ideal speed for these bullets? Im thinking 2600-3000 for a good long range bullet, but Im not sure if I will get it out of these, because of the short magasin of the Remington. Does anybody have ideeas of witch speeds I could get?

Depends what long range is out past 500 I would go with the 284 under both will work just fine.

What kind of speeds could I get with these to bullets in 284 then? Remeber OAL of cartridge has to be 2.800 witch limits the ammount of powder. Even though the cartridge was designed to be used with the short action, it kind of limp, when seating the bullets so far in.

It's a dilemma, all right! A lot depends on what kind of game you will be hunting. If limited to just deer, I'd get a .260. If you bag will include elk, moose, etc., then get a .284, as you can find a better selection of bullets for heavy game in 7mm..... "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. In the short action w/ a 2.80 OAL, the .260 or 708 will work a bit better than a .284 IMO. Now if you can get that mag box to 3.10", now the .284 will come into it's own. As far as vel. depends a lot on the bbl. length. With a 26"bbl. on each you can expect an easy 2900fps/123gr/.260 & 2700fps/139gr/.260. I don't have a .284, but I doubt you get near 2800fps w/ those long 162gr match bullets, maybe 2600fps w/ the 175grSMK. I have a .260AI on a M700SA. I get 3050fps+/123gr Lapua & 2800fps+/142grSMK, this is from a 27" bll. Good luck w/ the project. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

The short action works very nicely for the 260, however, bullet selection is much more limited than for 7 mms. My 260 is in a short-action handgun (XP100R)whose short magazine nicely accomodates 129 and 140 gr loaded cartridges. Bullets heavier than that would take up too much case room, however. I personally think that a long action suits the 284 better than a short action; particularly the Remington short action. That will let you load heavier bullets and monolythic bullets, which tend to be longer, without taking up too much powder space in order for them to fit the short action magazine. I have a 6/284 built on a long action. Even the light 75 gr bullets I use in it tend to just fit a short action magazine when set out as I load them for my long action. My standard 284 is in a single shot in Encore. With 140 gr Barnes X bullets set out to match it's throat they are nearly as long as a 30-06 cartridge. They definitely would not fit any short action I can think of. They are both good and unique cartridges. The 284 is largely kept alive by wildcatters who favor it's case; which was way ahead of it's time and likely the first "short mag." The 260 is a excellant mid-sized game cartridge whose production is likely limited because we Americans tend not to buy 6.5mms, judging from the sale of past cahmberings in that caliber. In either case I'd plan to stock up on cases while you can esp the 284, which is one-of-a kind. Fortunately the 260 can be made from several other cases.

I realized that I failed to answer your question about speed. Though it may not help you much the 260 gets 2750 (out of a 15" barrel) with 125 gr Partitions. The 284 gets 2800 with 150 Barnes X and Reloader 19 out of a 24" barrel.
