I know you don't have to seat a bullet to the cannelure, but if you wanted to, could you use the Lee FCD to crimp instead of roll or taper crimping? If so, where would you seat the bullet: to the bottom, middle, or top of the cannelure?

Everything I say is fully substantiated by my own opinion.

Some bullets, like Swift A-Frames and Barnes TSX (at least in the .416 and .423 bullets) have a broad cannelure which is perfect for the Lee Factory Crimp. I seat the bullet to the top of the cannelure. For bullets with a V-shaped groove I crimp with the standard roll crimp of the seating die.

Red,

I really like the LFC Dies, to the point where I'm using them for about all loads.

With some of the Hornady & Remington bullets I use I also use the Lyman LVD chamfering tool which has much less accute angle than the standard vanilla-flavored Inside/Outside chamfering tools. When I seat the bullets to the top of the cannelure when using this tool it really gives the LFCD a good "bite" and a very solid crimp.

Cheers,
