I have been loading 416 Woodleigh projectiles 400gn rnsp with no problem but on trying Woodleigh,s 416 solids, I cannot crimp to the cannelure as it is designed for the 416 Rigby and the cannelure is too far back, ie overall length of certridge is too long for the magazine.

If I crimp the case to the projectile using a Lee cimp die is this enough to stop the projectile from sliding back into the case under recoil?

What,s youre experience out there and any advice greatfully accepted.

You should not need to crimp for a .416 Rem in a bolt gun at all - at least I have never had to. I would just ignore the crimp cannelure.

There have been some reports about .416 Rem bullets creeping forward over time - probably due to pretty havily compressed loads. However, for loads you intend to use within the next 6 months or so, there should be no problem without a crimp.

If you insist on crimping, and you crimp with a Lee Factory Crimp die, then you can also ignore the cannelure. That die does not require a cannelure to crimp.

I agree.....load a dozen or so and go to the range and see for yourself if the crimp is needed.

Others will argue that the crimp is needed for accuracy, for consistancy of ignition, and many other things that may or may not be true. Load em and shoot em...be your own judge.

Just buy a cannelure cutter from ch4 and put the cannelures exactly where you want them !!

Forget the cannelure like the other have said.

I had a ch4d cannelure tool for about one day before sending it right back.

The 410 gr woodleigh bullets also have a recoil grove thats too far forward for the 416 rem mag to use.I didnt crimp and have never had any slide forward.I did use the lee crimp die on the speer 350 gr but loaded a bunch without crimping them with the same result.The 410 gr woodleigh bullet seem to kick way harder than all the 400 gr bullets I have shot.The barnes 400 gr solid has a recoil grove that perfict for the 416 .

Just use the Lee Factory Crimp Die. They are the true foundation of Western civilization.
