A few days ago I bought a box of Hornady 7mm 139gr. BTSP's for loading practise rounds in my 7mm Rem. Mag.

Friday night I sized 30 cases, primed em' and measured out my favorite charge of H4831.

And then went to seat the bullets.

Guess what, ALL of them were undersized and just slipped straight into the sized case necks.

Needless to say I did not use these bullets but took em' back to the store to an incredulous clerk (who was a handloader himself). I had brought one of my sized cases with me to demonstrate the problem.

We checked the other 3 boxes of Hornady 139gr. BTSP's on the shelf, same thing. Hornady 154 SP's, Sierra 150 BT's and Noslers were all tested against my sized case and were as they should be.

Unfortunately I did not have my micrometer handy, it being in one of my unpacked boxes that I keep meaning to unpack Big Grin

So I didn't get a measurement.

I'm wondering if Hornady mislabelled .277 140 gr. BTSP's with a 7mm 139gr. BTSP label.

In 31 years of handloading 10's of thousands of rounds for over 20 calibers I've never had this happen before.

If "people" are involved in the packing process I would say it's real possible someone had a bad day....overall I like hornady products and applaude some of their advances like the new upgraded dies, "revolution" ammo for lever action rifles, etc etc. I find the good old interlock to be one heck of a bullet for the $$$$ and darn accurate. I like 'em but employees can screw up.

I think you need to measure them and confirm that the bullets are (as you suspect) .277"

Assuming that is confirmed you need to send them to Steve Hornady personally and explain the situation and ask for replacement bullets.

On a good day Hornady alone makes about 30 bullets per second all day long and this is the first ever post I've read that claimed the wrong bullets was in the box.

I don't really believe this demonstrates poor quality control.

I've used a lot of Hornady bullets over the years the only problem I've struck was one bullet that had been made upside down the lead was exposed on the bottom and the top was FMJ this was was in a box of 150gn 303 Spire point bullets

I think that was intentional just to see if the guys down under are paying attention.

Not only should you let Hornady know but tell them the lot # so they can recall the product. I bet they make it right with you.

Skinner,
Is it possible that your expander was the wrong size? I just bought a RCBS die set for 6.5x55 Swede, and the expander/decapper rod assembly was missing the pin. I found a pin, after I contacted the store that sold it to me (they agreed to send me a new decapper/expander and everything). Before I sized any cases with the original expander, I measured it, just for fun, and because it didn't look quite right. Sure 'nuff, it was a 7mm. Is that what happened to you? Not trying to be smart, just wondering if you've loaded with those particular dies before. Hope you manage to straighten out the problem.
Regards,
Graham

I agree with OL` Joe. If there's a problem with the bullets, (i.e. wrong caliber for advertized size), then get the lot # and let Hornady know so they can get them recalled.

Only problem I ever had with Hornady was I found a .257 87 gr interlock in a box of 100 gr .243 interlocks. It was from a factory fresh box and I didnt have any .257 bullets at the time in my stocks so it wasnt a cross contamination issue on my part. I did notify Hornady but nothing ever came of it.
