Bullet Barely Goes into Fired Case - Problem?

I shot my 6 BR today and noticed that a bullet will not go into a fired case - if I clean the inside of the neck with a brush, I can push a bullet into the neck with some hand pressure. The neck of a loaded round measures .270 and the neck of a fired case measures .271 to .2715. As best as I can measure the inside of the neck measures about .243. The neck wall is .0135. Darrel Holland put the rifle together and I requested that he cut the neck so that I would not have to neck turn cases. Does it sound like my neck is too tight? I am using Lapua cases and am thinking that I might try Rem. cases - maybe the neck walls are thinner. Do I need to make a chamber cast? I am thinking that a fired case neck expands when the cartridge fires and then contracts slightly, so maybe I have more clearance than it appears. Advice please.

There should be some spring-back in the cases, so you should be OK. I think you probably have .0015 clearance upon firing.

It is so tight that any thick-necked cases might give you dangerous pressures, so I'd measure them all before loading the first time. Especially if you change brass. I'd stick with the Lapua.

The cases should last essentially forever at reasonable loads.

Check out Varmint Al's webb site, varmintal.com Go to the reloading section and get the info on a Fitted Case. Please do this before you make any changes to your TOY. You will need to be aware of the chamber you have but, this is the best way to get REPEATABILITY. You can play with different brass but I would be very happy to have what you'got!!!

GuyG,

I would check with the man who did the chamber and ask him the neck dimension. Usually if it is a tight neck the gun builder stamps it on the barrel. It may be just a minimum Saami chamber but nonetheless be careful.
