Hello all first off I will tell you what I am loading it is a 223 rem 26.2gr benchmark 50 gr nosler Ballistic tip using rem 7 1/2 benchrest primers Ok now my question would changing primers make any diffrence in accuracy, or just change pressure levels or none of the above. If its a good idea what would be some primers that I could try. Im still very confused on how the primer thing works "If guns cause crime, all of mine are defective." - Ted Nugent -

First of all, go to the FAQ section of Accuratereloading and see the results of Saeed's tests: http://www.accuratereloading.com/primer.html He did not use a .223 as one of his test rifles, but the general point is the same: Sometimes primers make a significant difference and sometimes not. If you want to do your own tests, I'd suggest you get 100 each of Federal, Winchester, and CCI primers (small rifle, for the .223) and try 10 to 20 rounds with each, with nothing different except the primers, to see whether you can discover a significant difference. It's almost impossible to predict, in advance, what your results are likely to be. "How's that whole 'hopey-changey' thing working out for ya?"

I learned long ago that 223 is one round that benefits from use of a magnum primer. Before everybody lights their torch, I do not use mag primers in some rifles that should benefit from them. But I do like the results I get using small rifle mag primers in 223. I would just go with Remington's benchrest primers and forget the rest.

If you're using a gas gun, I'd recommend CCI's #41.

My own preference is for Winchester SRP.

My results were exactly the opposite. Loading for a Remington 700 heavy barrel varmint rifle in .223, using Win 748 powder, I found that switching from a CCI regular to a CCI magnum primer significantly DECREASED my accuracy. "How's that whole 'hopey-changey' thing working out for ya?"
