I have been asking questions about calibers and rifles so thanks for all the help.
After going through alot of options and thoughts of spending $800 to $1200 for a semi custom I finally did the frugal thing and bought a Savage 12fvss-s in .223 with 1/9 twist, this is the single shot version.

I found it for $379 + shipping wholesale only (closeout I guess) so I called up my local dealer and made him a deal to buy it and mark it uo 10% so $415 to me. This made sense to me because he would have charged me $35 to accept a rifle I found on the web anyway.

Whaddaya think, did I do good?

Is this your first rifle? The .223 is a good one to start with and the 1 n 9 twist will let you shoot heavier bullets than nornally possible.

First Varmint rifle, I have 2 others from about 9 years ago a Browning Stainless Stalker in 7MM Mag an a Model 70 Winchester in .243 Sporter.

Sounds like a good way to go. You have three cartridges there that will cover 99% of what 99% of us will ever do with a rifle.The 7 Rem Mag will do 140's at 3200 and 175's at 3000;a reliable long range deer whacker as well as an elk/moose rifle,243 will do 100's at 2900 for a good small deer/close range deer rifle as well as a 75/80 gr long range varmin blaster,and the 223...well what can one say? I haven't been without for 12 years now,....a gopher killer of the highest order,miserly on powder,gets 90% of the great 22-250's velocity(I have one of those too)and factory ammo is second to none for economy.Ya' done well.

Ya did good. The Savage is a good gun for a fair price. You may want to consider having the trigger replaced or worked on at some time, but I think you will be very happy overall. If I were you I would spend some of the money you saved on the firearm and buy a decent scope (Leupold, Burris, etc.). The frustrations brought on by cheap scopes ruin an otherwise great firearm experience. The .223 is a good caliber. Plenty of inexpensive and accurate ammo. Welcome back to shooting. You couldn't have picked a better time. The knowledge and support of everyone out here is overwhelming. Good Shooting!
