I am fairly new to reloading and I am having a problem with seating depth in my Browning Bar .308 win.I have tried smudging the bullet and determining where it is in contact with the lands.Because of the semi-auto action in this gun,I am getting many extra contact points on the bullet and can not determine the exact point where contact is being made.I am using 150 grain Nosler boattail spitzers.I worked up a round to test fit and it measures 2.791 oal.It is seated to a depth of .301.Am I close? What else could I try to see if I am just off the lands?

I tried this on Rem 7400 in .243 but could never get satisfactory results. The action had too much slop in it to get as precise a measurement as one can when using a bolt action. In addition we had to use small base dies to fully resize the base of the case in order to get the reloaded cases to cycle as they should.

TH, The only thing you have to worry about is how the round fits in the Magazine, In a browning Stalker I had, you could only seat the bullets to an oal of 2.800", no longer, that was with 150gr NBTs, and they shot like gangbusters, 3/4" at 100yds. It sounds like your right in there as far as correct oal. Well, you could go another .009" if you want, Jay

You may want to invest in a Stoney Point Chamber-All Overall Length Gauge for Auto/Lever Action. Midwayusa sells this for $33.99 (non dealer price). Shopping around, you may get it cheaper. I use one for my bolt actions and am very pleased with this product. It is easy to use and really helps to find the OAL your looking for. oh yeah, you will also need to buy a 308 case that goes with this. This will run $5.38.
