sierra game king on elk......
Was wondering if any of you have any experiance with the sierra game kings on elk and other big critters. My .300 win seems to like only them in 180 gr.
I know they will kill blacktial bucks but thats all I've shot with them.
I just don't know anyone who uses them, its not my first choice of bullet but have to go with what my rifle will shoot.

lots of opinions here.....I won't shoot a Sierra gameking at anything. There's many better choices and for the same money. Gimme corelokts before Sierras.

I am in agreement

My computer blipped before I finished my post. I have had very poor luck with Sierra's on big game. A premium bullet that shoots a 2.5 inch group is plenty accurate for elk if that is the best your rifle will do and is FAR superior to a conventional jacket and core bullet that shoots into a small group. Try Barnes triple shocks, even lighter than 180's. They shoot well in almost any rifle, but you have to load them off of the lands a bit. Good luck.

My brother uses 200 gr. SGKs on elk (30-338) with great success - he reports that the bullets penetrate end-to-end. They are very accurate bullets that will hit where you aim them - something that's very important when shooting across canyons (~400 yds) in the West.

safariman brings up a good point many guys over look when choosing a proper bullet for elk or really any big game hunting. What kind of accuracy does your 180grSGK give you vs say a 180grNP? If the diff. is like 1" vs 1.5", I would shoot the NP. If your talking 1" vs 3", I would shoot the SGK & keep my hold out for a broadside double lung shot. Have you ever had any problems w/ the SGK on BT deer? That would be another indicator. I'ld only worry about a close range, high vel. impact.

Some folks use them...but why is beyond me..if your gun is that accurate then it will shoot a premium bullet almost as well and an elk is a big target....I wouldn't even consider risking losing a fine animal like that over choosing a questionable bullet, just doesn't make since to me....

That bad thing about bullets that are conventional jacketed like Sierra is that they work most of the time and these guys that have shot a couple of elk verbally swear by their effectiveness, expound on their killing ability and so fourth..then later the bullet fails and they remain very silent...A poorly constructed bullet only fails sometimes...

Give yourself a break and use the best bullets on the market and save those Sierras for shooting thoes tiny little groups...

Same here.

The Corelokt is a great killing bullet...not stunningly accurate, but much better than a GameKing. And the partition is really not that expensive.

In my 358 wins, this is the only bullet I use... dirt cheap, accurate, and plentiful...

and knock the holy hannah out of game...

seems they followed ackley/keith/o'conner on sd of .25 or higher for north american game.

I've used Sierra bullets on elk, but always kept the velocity to 2600-2700 fps, with good luck. No ass shots allowed, just lung/heart shots. In velocities above that, I would use a more stoutly constructed bullet. Practice with Sierras, then buy enough bullets to reload to sight in your rifle, then go hunt with the stouter bullet.
