What powder do you like with 165 Rainiers in 40 S&W
I picked up some 165 grn HP Rainiers recently, and was wondering what powders you out there in reloading land like to use with this bullet/weight? I will be loading in a Glock 27.

I want to use the loads strictly for target (informal) and plinking, somewhere in the 900-1000 fps range. I have loaded Unique, Blue Dot, HS-6, and HS-7 in other cartridges in the past, but have only loaded Unique in the 40 S&W.

I am not looking so much for a specific load, just for a powder recomendation and why you like/use that powder.

I won't be shooting competitions, so don't need to "make" power factors. They are just for "fun" shooting, as my daughter says.

I won't be using them for ccw carry either; I'll leave that chore to the Golden Sabre's and the Win SXT's.

Thanks for the help in advance.

VihtaVouri VN340 is the go-to for my 40S&W in all bullet weights. It is a bit more expensive than some, but a friend who does VERY well in IPSC competition put me onto it. I have tried several others and keep going back.

It is reasonably clean, gets you very good velocities, and meters well...

Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.

I use Bullseye. For me it works great for informal target shooting and it works well not only for my 40, but my 45 and 9mm as well. I went with it because it worked well with all the pistol calibers I load for so I don't have to have several different powders around for pistol.

i was using imr "pb" in 9 mm, after seeing an article in an old issue of
'guns" magazine, tried it and stayed with it. i use remington's 155 gr. hp bought in bulk. gun is a star 31P.

I use a Lyman 175 gr. truncated bullet that I cast myself with an alloy of wheelweights with a little Ludlow metal to bring up the tin content. I use AA #7 with Rem. 5-1/2 primers. This is a nice all-around load in my Baby Eagle.

Unique should be pretty good. A bit dirty perhaps.... but accurate and the ideal speed powder for your purposes.

Nothing wrong w/ Unique, HS6 is good also. Just about any of the fast to med. powders will get you safely to 1000fps w/ 165gr bullet. BlueDot & HS7 might be abit slow for 900-1000fps loads.
