Does anyone have experience with this bullet, is it designed for 45-70 or 458 Mag velocities. I wrote to Hornady but for some reason they have not responded.

It was specifically designed for the 450 Marlin (which means hot-loaded 45-70 velocity).

Multivis, You are incorrect about the FP not being an interlock bullet. It is listed as one, and after shooting and testing them, they hold together very well. I would highly recommend them. Joel Slate

Multi-Vis, How did it taste? Seriously, I believe the 350 gr. FP is a fantastic bullet. I love shooting them in my guide gun. I use it here for bear. I enjoy calling them in close, and I want to stop them fast here in the thick brush of western Oregon. I also think it will be a great Lion load... Joel Slate

There was a mini review of this bullet a year or so back in the American Rifleman, as I recall, it performed well when leaving the muzzle at 2000-2200 fps, but when launched 2500 from a 458 win mag, it kinda came unglued, would be devastating on deer, but not so good for hogs or other heavy boned, thick skinned critters.

Joel to tell you the truth it was tough as boot leather!!!!! I have used the RN in my Ruger No.3 but have found that the Barnes 400gr.spit shoots better in this gun and I can get 2235fps with it. That load was made up for the dark timber elk in the cascades,as it turns out Im just east of you in Redmond. Have a good one and enjoy the rain!:::::Multi Vis

Multivis, Where do you hunt elk at? I hunt the Upper Deschutes unit, since I have a place near LaPine...

The times Ive hunted the high cascade hunt Ive hunted in an area between Hwy 20 and 22 on the valley side. Have never gotten one out of there but havent hunted that area for many years because its gotten so crowded. Have hunted the areas your talking about also and there are some nice herds of aminals there also.:::::Multi Vis

I tested the 350 gr Hornady FN alongside the Speer FN in my Ruger No 1 .45-70 and found that the Hornady bullet has amazing integrity, but is much softer than the Speer bullet. In the .458 Win Mag I would choose the Speer bullet, but the Hornady is the bullet of choice even for a fast .45-70 rifle. At 1900 fps it will flatten out like a pancake, creating a cavity that actually tapers from the entrance to the terminus (instead of having the typical expansion bubble inside). The impact would be explosive, but it holds up very well. It will also expand very well at 1400 fps, which is important for users of .45-70s who want to shoot farther than 50 to 100 yards. The Speer bullet expands a bit at 1900 fps and is not at all over-expanded at 2400 fps. Its a "solid" at 1400 fps and out-penetrated a 500 gr Hornady from a .458 Win Mag.
