I started testing with IMR4831 with mediocre accuracy results. Unusual. What powder(s) to try next?
I'm thinking IMR4350, IMR7828, W760, in approximately that order, mainly because they are what I have on hand. Your thoughts?

I have been loading the same bullet for my son in his Rem. 700. I use 58.0/H-4831, Win. brass, and Fed. 210 primers. I seat the bullet 0.030" off the lands. When I had the rifle zeroed after working up the load, I put up a target at 300 yards. The 5-shot group was 1-1/8 inches. That is better than average, but the load will consistently stay under 1" at 100 yards.

I have had good results with H4350 so I would try IMR4350 then IMR7828 and finally 760. IMR 4831 shoots the best for me with the bullet seated just to the front groove.

If a .270 won't shoot with IMR-4831 then try H4831, that caliber and powder are like Mutt and Jeff, they belong together..If it won't shoot with H4831, its time to excute it and bury it in your backyard, its criminal!! or you could amputate the barrel and replace it.

This is true and proven many times over. Heck millions of times over.

You can't get it now, and it doesn't quite have the velocity of the published loads, but mine love the Winchester 780. MRP is very close to that, as is RL22. Of course so is 4831 for that matter.

RL-22 doesn't like me. As a matter of fact none of the RL powders do except RL 7 and 15.

An old timer, older than me even, told me to fill a 270 case with 4831, as much as it would hold, then seat a 130 gr. Might have worked. He also told me about seating bullets upside down.

I agree about the 270 and IMR4831, and I like Ray's Mutt and Jeff phrase. I guess we're all out of Bruce Hogdon's 4831 machine gun powder. Anybody remember what it sold for? (In bulk.)

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I'll try some H4831 and IMR 4350 tomorrow and post results. All out of RL22, so will wait on that one.

I think you used to could purchase a 40 lb keg of 4831 for $100. That was after it had gone up too.

I bet the ones you are buying do the trick.

I paid $.50 a pound for it in the 1960s....it run a .270 as well as anything I could buy at that time.

I am only a 57 model. But I did do a little reloading in about 1970 with one of those little Lee hand load kits. I think that is why I don't like Lee too much still today. lol. I got a can of powder then - who knows what is was,

I know there were some places that would sell you a scoop or a little bag of powder. I lived to far in the sticks. But at 50 cents a pound - wow.

My buddy had bought one of those 40 lbs or so kegs and I know he loaded with it for over 10 years or more. At least he already knew what powder he was going to use. Wink

Gentlemen, here is the report I promised. I shot a 10 round ladder for both IMR4350 and H4831. Surprisingly, the 4350 was terrible. However, the H4831 was very promising. The last 7 shots, increasing by .5 gr each, grouped into slightly more than an inch. I'm guessing that the rifle will do consistent one inch or better groups.

I will now do a little testing on overall length, but this M70 has a pretty short chamber and with the 140 TSX's the load is about 105% volume at .010 off the lands. I might also try magnum primers. Testing was done with Federal 210's. Not sure why I should bother. The shooter never practices and has a hard time staying inside 3" even from the bench.

Again, thanks to all.

Brice,
I purchased a 150 lb. stainless steel, container with a sealed top, all crated up in heavy wood, and marked US Army..full of old 4831, the stuff that Jack wrote about in Outdoor life..Bought it in 1980 from and old gunsmith in Twin Falls, Id.

I still have 25 or so pounds of that stuff and its still fresh in that container..62 grs. of it in my 270s gets me 3277 FPS and hardly any pressure and and cases last forever..Thanks to m idol, Jack O'Connor, he sold me on the stuff many years ago and I jumped on the chance when the offer came up I knew what he was selling..

I did sell some 40 pouds of it to pay for the rest, I sold it for $50 a pound to one guy..I have seen it sell for $40 per pound on the internet. Today that wouldn't be that good a deal, Norma sells for that..Wonder what its worth today?

Brice: My .270 shot 3 rounds into 1/4 inch at 100 yards using Winchester brass, Federal 210 primers and 56 grains of H-4831 with 130 Nosler ballistic tip bullets seated .050 off the lands. Next best was 54 grains that shot 3 rounds into 5/8". Never did try anything in between 54 and 56 grains.

Brice,
I do some advising on cattle to local ranchers..I tell them to sell when I'm buying and buy when Im selling! Roll Eyes

Also tell them as opposed to buying cattle, they should buy hammers at $3.00 each and sell them at $2.00, beats the hell out of the cattle biz! shocker

Hmmmm, an investment advisor? I'll take that under consideration!! maybe add it to my portfolio. diggin

Ray,
Old age and cunning will beat youth and enthusiasm, or something like that.

I called you a few years ago with a question about something-or-other. You were most helpful. Probably won't happen, but I'd sure like to buy you a drink sometime.

It is supposedly Holy Writ that the powder for the 270Win is IMR4350... that powder NEVER worked for me when loading for my brother's rifle...(Smokey case necks and shoulders..)
what did work well for me was Reloader19.
