A-Square vs. Barnes for .375 H&H

I want to develop 300 grain bullet loads for a .375 H&H. I've used Barnes bullets on deer in both .30-06 and .300 Win Mag calibers with excellent results, but have never used A-Square bullets at all.

For DG and BG, I want to load both soft nosed and solid bullets that will shoot to the same point of impact out to reasonable ranges, say 150-200 yards or so.

The A-Square soft nosed and solid bullets are almost identical in shape and BC, whereas the Barnes soft nosed TSX bullets have a spitzer shape, and the solids have a flat nosed on a rounded ogive. Additionally, they have quite different BC's (.357 for the TSX, .307 for the banded solids).

Any experience and/or advice loading either or both of these brands of bullets to achieve the same point of impact? Also, any experience with using A-Square bullets in general, as they are new to me?

Thanks in advance,
Bill Thibeault

Hello Bill,

I am no expert, however, I have shot the Barnes TSX in my 375 H&H for a few years and can honestly say that it is one of the best shooting bullets I have ever come across for this caliber. I have not reloaded any 300gr TSX since the 270gr TSX is more suitable for the type of shooting I do in Canada. The advice I would have is this one. Use a MAG primer, and get some RELODER 15. Its the powder of choice for that (caliber, bullet) combo. My guess is this. If you load up some 300gr Barnes Banded solids and zero them at 100 yards, your 300Gr TSX will shoot 2 inches high at 100 yards. This will allow you to shoot plains game with the TSX out to 300 Yards without worrying to much about bullet drop, and also to fire solids at close ranges without also worrying about bullet impact. Trial and error will only tell you how that combination of bullets really works in your barrel.

Best of luck,

Maurice
