A friend of mine wants me to reload for him for this caliber. I need info on what powder and bullet to begin with. The brass alone on midway is selling for $2 a piece. We found dies from there. He doesn't have the gun here at the moment,so I don't know the length of the barrel or make of the gun.He will get it here when I can get as much info for reloading and supplies. Thanks in advance Erosion

I have P.O.Ackley's loading book with the 7x61 Sharp and Hart listed. There are lots of loads, so if you can narrow down what bullet weight your friend will be shooting, we can go from there. The powders listed are all IMR powders, plus 4831, and none of the newer ones.

Or, go the simple route. Buy a Sierra or Hornady Loading manual. They give loads for the S&H. Cool You may even be able to find it (the manual) on line.

The 7x61 S&H is only slightly less capacity than the 7mm Remington Magnum. That is with the newer Super 7x61 brass and not the older original stuff. About 5 grains of H20 depending on what brand of 7mm Rem Magnum brass you use as a comparison. So, you should be able to interpolate data.

Instead of buying brass at $2 per each you can make your own using the 7mm Rem Mag brass full length resized and trimmed (about 1/10" shorter).

Whatever you decide to do it would be a good idea to compare case capacity in H2O with Remington brass and go from there.

I agree with the make your own brass. My 280PDK has the same capacity as the 7x61. I use RL22 with either 140 or 160 Accubonds.

As usual just my $.02

If the 7X61 is a Schultz & Larsen it may have the slow 1 turn in 12" twist rifling suitable for only lighter bullets.

Interesting comment.....every single one I've ever seen was a S&L.....but there could easily be a few Mausers out there custom chambered for it.....

And the 1-12" is correct in the S&L.

As I recall, the S&L 7x61 Sharpe and Hart has a long freebore something like a factory Weatherby, and most of the data I've seen in this caliber was developed in those rifles. If the rifle is other than a S&L it may not have this feature, rendering max. loads (from the older manuals especially) too hot for good case life. Approach max. loads with caution, as always.
