I can't wait any longer...My new Savage Model 14 in 300 WSM has not arrived, but I will be going out of town to a great gun store (at least that's what I hear) in a few days. I thought I'd go ahead and try to get some info. so I can buy the right stuff.

Savage's website says the rifle has a 24" barrel with a 1 in 10" twist.

Which bullet weight is 1 in 10 best suited for 150, 165 or 180?

Does anyone have a particular load that has worked well with this caliber? Magic powder?

I will be taking this rifle on an elk hunt this fall and will probably use it for whitetails some.

I like 165's and 180's using IMR4831. I'm also trying H4831SC and it looks promising with the 165 grain Nosler partitions.

1-10 twist is pretty much standard for factory 300 Mags of all variety. It will handle up to 220 grainers fine.

I have had best luck with 4350 in 165-180 grain bullets, and Varget in 150 grain bullets. I couldn't get good accuracy from 4831SC until I got up to 200 grain Sierra gamekings...but it worked well there. My particular rifle gets really finiky with bullets under 165 grains...and I prefer the heavy bullets to hunt with anyway. YMMV.

BTW, good to me with this rifle is sub .75" at 100 yards...good hunting accuracy.

Enjoy the new toy!

Born to hunt,

The 300 WSM does well w/ the lighter shorter bullets 150s, 165s, and 180s due to it's short design. About the longest bullet I've used in my 300WSM is the 180 NBT and it just happened to be the most accurate as well.

I have the Savage 16 Weather Warrior and the thing that limits me the most is the short Magazine length. Your rifle will most likely have the same Mag length so, you can forget about chasing the lands you cant even get close unless you shoot it like a single shot.

Now on loads, I tried IMR4350, R19, R22, H4831, H4895, and H380 w/ bullets such as Hornady SST 150s and 165s, 180 NBTs, and 165 Speer Hot Cores. The Speer HCs and NBTs shot the best of thos bullets and the only powder that gave me good groups was R22. After many many different combos in that rifle, I settled on the 180 NBTs, 66.5 grains of R22, WLRM primers, seated to just make it into the magazine. That particular combo usually will put three shots into .6-.75" at 100 yards and chronos 2940-2950 15' from the muzzle.

The 165 Speer HCs will shoot about 1-1.25" at 100 yards when loaded w/ 67-68 grains of R22.

My barrel is quite fast, It shoots alot faster than any book Data I've read so, your velocity results may vary. I did find one screaming load w/ the 165s and R19, 71 grains was chronoing 3275-3300 fps. Alittle too fast for me but pressure didn't seem too high as far as brass and primer pockets go.

Good Luck w/ your new Rifle.

Bill,

I think you will be pleased. I have loaded Hornady Interbonds (180 gr), Hornady A-max (180 gr), Hornady Interlock (180 gr), and Speer Grand Slam (180 gr). I have tried H4831SC, IMR 7828, and Win 760 powders. My rifle shoots the Hornady (IB and Interlocks) well but I have had failures of the IB on game (deer).

I would recommend the Speer Grand Slams on top of 65 gr of Win 760 powder lit by a Winchester WLRM primer.

Good luck working up a load for your new Savage.

I am absolutely sold on H4350 and 180 grain bullets. I use WLRM primers.

I've had good luck in my Tikka with the 165 grain Sierra HPBT Game Kings. This is a great bullet for hunting and doesn't cost near as much as the Partitions or other premium bullets. The rifle seems to like 4831.
