I am getting split case necks in my 416 taylor after reloading fireformed cases. Any ideas? Loads are not hot, Brass is new Winchester 458. | ||

the only time that I have had necks split was with hot loads. not saying it can't be something else but that is all I have seen do it. are you sure the loads aren't hot? have you got any pressure sings on the primers? Red | |||

No signs of pressure anywhere. I do not recall the exact load off the top of my head however the powder is RL-15 and I do not even think you can get enough in the case to cause pressure issues. My thoughts are the chamber size. If the chamber is larger than my RCBS dies then the sizing may be working the necks too much. I am looking into that issue and was looking for additional feedback from others. | |||

Try to just necksize, and see if thats better. Or try another brand of brass, and see if those you've got are to stiff. I have never had that problem .(yet) *Treat problems like a dog; Take a sniff ..... If it can't be killed, eaten, or fucked? Just pie on it, and walk on!:-) Arild. | |||

Roscoe, It sounds like the brass is work-hardened; is this basic or .458 brass necked down or 7mmRem.Mag., .300Win.Mag., or .338Win.Mag. (or other) necked up? Was the brass new before you worked the necks? George  | |||

The brass is Winchester brand and began life as a 458 WM. I will try to get my hands on some other brass and see if I have similar problems. About half of the cases did not split so I tend to agree that it may not be a chamber problem. I also checked to see if a unfired 416 bullet would fall through the case neck on the unsplit brass and there is some resistance. I wish you could buy Federal brass. Winchester brass has given me problems before in other calibers. Most works fine however some have quality issues. ****************************************************************** R. I use win brass in my taylor and have not had this trouble. could very will be this batch of brass that did not get heat treated properly. or other factors | |||

Roscoe, Did you solve the neck splitting problem? I was interested in saving money by using the RCBS die to form 416Taylor from 458WM brass. My understanding is RCBS makes/recommends a neck reamer and reamer die to thin the neck back to specs prior to full length resizing and loading after necking down the 458 brass. Otherwise, the necking down alone will leave the case necks too thick causing various problems including splitting. Is this correct? Thanks, Gary | |||

I aways necked up 338 brass in two stages 375 to 416... You neck splitting is caused by brass fatigue, always start wildcats with NEW UNFIRED brass..Also its possible that your have work hardened the 458 brass..but I suspect it was not new brass to start with...
