I bought a pound of Winchester WXR today. I knew it was in the range or the 4831's/RL22, so I knew it will work in my 260 Remington with 140 gr. bullets. I can't find any data for the 260/WXR combo, but there is alot of data for RL22 (which I heard is near identical to WXR - and Norma MRP too). Could I assume the max load will be within a grain or so of the RL22 loads for the WXR powder? I found WXR data for the 7mm Rem Mag, and max loads seem to be very close to RL22 loads.

I do have a chrony to aid in load development. Any help would be much appreciated.

Here is quickLOAD estimation for the 140gr Hornady seated to SAAMI. Looks to me that the max load (to the industry reccomended redline of 52,666psi) is in the region of 45.5gr

As the blurb says, 'quickLOAD data must not be used in place of published data etc etc'

I'd probably work up from 41gr. If you seat longer but not on the lands you should be able to go higher as at that COL a lot of case volume is occupied by the bullets.

Y'know, I wish W-W would quit bringing out a "great powder for heavy bullet/magnum loads", then, after it's around for a few years, they drop it. They did it with 780BR, then 785, then WMR. Wonder how long WXR will be on the market, before they decide to drop it?

tod - I'd load it the same as the others you've worked with - start out around 40 grains, and work up till you get around 2,700 - 2,750, and stop there. Are you loading the XLC's?
BTW - the snow's melting on my range, it's down to only about 7 feet deep now [Frown]

1894 ,

Thanks alot, that is so cool. By way of comparing what loads I got for WXR in other cals (270, 7mm, 300), and comparing it to RL22, it seems they are close. Maybe WXR uses .8 grs. less powder on average. I guesstimated a max load for 140 gr. bullets at 45 grs. WXR, +/- a hair.

I will try it with some 140 gr. Sierra GameKings to get an idea of ballpark performance, then will reduce and switch to the 140 gr. Barnes XLC. Is it possible to calculate the data for WXR and a 140 gr. Barnes X or even an XLC?? Or can quickload tell what the blue coating is going to do? Also, my rifle has a 22" barrel.

Thanks again.

Tod,

No such thing as a free lunch. The extra length into the case seems to make a fair difference.

Please be careful not to mix the columns! Also I have to say that for this conservative loader quickLOAD seems to overestimate chargeweights - that may be due to tight custom chambers in my rifles however.

1894 ,

Again, thank you. You've been a big help. Is the column on the far left, %, tell you what how much the powder will fill up the capacity until it is compressed with that particular bullet? I notice the Hornady is 0.0% @ 46 grs., the XLC is 0.0% @ 43 grs.

Thanks again.

The 0.0% you are referring to is the % change from the charge weight input by me. I adjust this figure on the input window until I get near the reccomended pressure limit and then click on the '% step' button which gives a spread upwards and down from that. The next % is the percentage fill, then charge weight, then MV, then energy, then chamber pressure (assuming not on lands) then muzzle pressure then % powder burnt by muzzle, then barrel/burn time (not sure which)

quickLOAD is a tremendous asset. I particularly like the %burnt feature which allows one to find the powder with the best muzzle velocity for dawn/dusk shooting.

That is a cool system. Really helpful for the odd powders.

How much does the quickload change for WXR, between the previous mentioned 140 gr. Hornady and the Sierra 140 gr. boat tail? 22" barrel. The reason I ask is I ran out of the 140 Hornady, and have a full box of 140 Sierra BTSP to try before the X bullets.
