I’m looking for 38 Special load suggestions for short barrel (2”) revolvers. Like many, if I could get components I’ve successfully used in the past there would be no problem. I’m getting lots of un-ignited powder grains with 9.1gn of H4227 and had similar problems with loads up to 12.0gn of Lil’gun. I’m trying to stick with 158gn SWCs and 158gn jacketed bullets. The problem is much less apparent in 4” barrels. One thing I will try is more aggressive crimping with 4227 and Lil’gun loads. Other powders I’d like suggestions on are Longshot, H110 and Steele. Guess I’ve also got plenty of W296 and H20/28 but would like to keep those for small bore shotgun purposes… Thanks, and good hunting,

A good powder I have used for 38 Spl in that bullet weight is Win 231. Steve........ NRA Patron Life Member GOA Life Member North American Hunting Club Life Member USAF Veteran

Yes, the old powders are still the best. The ones you are using are way too slow for low pressure cartridges like a 38.

W231 is a good powder to use. Many of the Gunshops/Chain Stores will have shotgun powder. Red Dot, Clays any of the fast burning powders will work well. Gulf of Tonkin Yacht Club NRA Endowment Member President NM MILSURPS

I am afraid you are using the wrong powders for the 38 Special. H4227 and H110 are far too slow for this. You need very fast powders for this one.

Well, thanks for the responses. Those have served to bring me back into focus and its clear I just need to find some of the right powders. More seem to be coming available and that should happen soon enough... I think Red Dot and Bullseye were about all I ever used for 38 Special reloads in the past, and I used the Bullseye for lighter bullet weights. The powders I’ve currently been trying are simply the more promising ones among those I have on hand. FYI, I tried some small rifle primers with these powders to see if that helped but I couldn’t see any difference. I wasn’t willing to use any of my limited small pistol magnum primers on this exercise. Again, thanks for the input, and good hunting,
