I was on the hodgdon sighty and saw some reduced loads for 7mm08 . They show the loads at 2600 fps .I want to try the 120 ballistic tips for my daughters deer hunt .How do you think they will perform at those speeds.

Not to worry, used 150s at 2300 and they're deadly. Jay

I'm not so sure, woodie. I think the 120 grainers probably have a much thinner jacket than the 140s and 150s, and might break up too fast.

There are a lot of posts over at 24 Hour Campfire to the effect that the new model 120's have thicker jackets than the 140's. For example, see http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?C...arch=true#Post447540

We haven't used the 120's, but my son is using 39 grains of RL15 with 140 BTs at 2400 fps.

I wouldn't hesitate to use Hornady's soft point 120 grain bullet at 2,600'/sec.

The BT is a varmint bullet I believe.

I've cut a bunch of bullets up looking at them and the 120s BTs are thicker than the 140s,,,

I'm shooting the 120s at 2950 out of my 7mm-08 and have had great results, hole in,,,bigger hole out,,,,kick is fairly light to. I've had better results with them than the 139 grain SST's

The same gun shoots 100 grain Sierra HPs 2 inches lower at 75 yards with 20 grains of blue dot,,,about noooo recoil and does Coyotes in real well.

nosler has said "tongue in cheek" that the 120gr pill is in fact the tougher (SD wise) as they use the smaller polycarbonate tip and a thicker jacket. The smaller point will allow more penetration before the time bomb goes off. I am a fiend when it comes to NBT's.

I have never had much luck for accuracy out of the H 4895 reduced loads on Hodgdon's web site.

However, I have had excellent luck with Blue Dot and SR 4759. I load those up for a niece in Montana, in a 7/08 on a Browning Micro Medallion....

She has used the 120s and taken several deer/antelope with that load and also took a cow elk with the 140 grain Ballistic Tip load...

Both of those used a charge or 22.5 grains of Blue Dot.

For SR 4759 and a 120 grain Ballistic tip try a load between 25 to 28 grains....

It should shoot circles around the accuracy you get with H 4895, and I bet you will feel less recoil and less muzzle blast and the cases will not be all black at the neck....

Cheers
