Can anyone help with guidance on suitable loads for use in the 6.5/.284. I presently use Ballistic tip bullets in the 100 grain weight range. My rifle is a Mauser 98 witrh Krieger 26" 1:9 twist. Present load of 56 grains Vit N160 giving app- roximately 1 inch groups. The rifle itself has a very short throat for the lighter and shorter bullets, accordingly the use of a heavy for calibre bullet such as 140 grain would see the bullet seated too far back and hence encroach on case capacity too much. I have more BT's to try, this time in 120 grain. I am using Lapua brass with Federal #210 Gold Medal primers. Powders here in the U.K include Alliant and Hodgdons. Maximum C.O.L with the 100 BT's is 2.86". Has anyone worked up accurate loads with the 120 grain BT's in this calibre? | ||

Here is a load I shoot in my 6.5-284. 54.0 grs. IMR 4350 with a 120 gr Nosler Solid Base. I have a 25-284 and It likes RL-25 so you might want to give that a try too My load in my 25-284 with a 100gr bullet is 55.5 gr RL-25. So this might be a good starting point with that powder. Your magazine is long enough to seat the longer bullets out so they don't infringe on your powder space and the twist should handle a 140 gr. just fine. It looks like your set up is crying for a deep throat. I once had a 6.5 that handled 140s to 160s accurately. 4" groups were the best I could get with 100 gr. bullets. With that short neck a tight long throat tends to hold the bullets more concentricly when the bullets are seated out. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!!
