I just love loading this cartridge!

I recently stumbled onto 2 loads that the accuracy blew my socks away.

have not chronographed it, but I did measure the groups. ( sort of)

I used 15 grains of IMR SR 4759, Large Rifle Primer, and both a 110 grain Speer HP and a Hornady 150 grain RN/FN.

At 50 yrds both groups could be covered with a quarter, and at 100 yrds both groups could be coverd with a half dollar or silver dollar ( take your pick)

Recoil was neglible and the two rifles sported 6 x Weaver Scopes. One was a Stainless Steel Marlin 336 and the other was a Model 94 Winchester AE, with the 24 inch( instead of the 20 inch) barrel.

Impressed me for a 30/30 load a lot!

Seafire... I ment to tell you that I am almost done with my sporter 30-30 in a Ruger number one. It has a 22" 1-10twist and should make for a good woods gun. Probably can bake 110s out of that tube fairly quick also.

I believe it digital dan. I have alot in mind with the rig, it will be interesting to me too try the light weight pointed projectiles on coyotes. I shoot alot of varmits on the off season, but I dont shoot much past 200 yards. Today at school I was drawing up a new quarter rib on "Solid Werks" CAD, and I will submit it to a buddy who is a Master at a HASS CNC... ill see if he can kick it out, because I just dont have time this semester to do it manualy. The quarter rib will be in stainless as is the whole gun. I just dont dig Rugers "hollow" quarter rib, and I am moving the scope mount cut. I have 3 R#1 actions here at home, 2 stainless, one blued.

Small Fry,;

Let me know how that turns out! I think a Number One in 30/30 woooould be such a cool rig.

Talked to a guy the other day that competes with Pistol Silouette and he shoots a T/C in 30/30 with a 14 inch barrel.
He uses a 168 grain MatchKing, fueled by 19 grains of SR 4759. For accuracy he said it was quite the combo.

That in a Number One would really be both fun to load for and definitely fun to shoot. What twist did you go with on that also.

I can actually see one of those in my future.

Seafire, one of these days I'm going to get me a .30/30, and try your 220-grain WW748 load!! Will also try to see if it can be duplicated with cast bullets!

I have had a Marlin 30/30 336 micro for years and it really likes the 170 grain bulets the best. I would suggest R15 or H4895 for a good accurate load.

Man, you talk about a brush buster, It will flat out do it. My biggest buck was taken w/ my "Dirty-Thirty" after a clean pass thru on a 2" dia. tree. The tree was approx. 10 feet from the deer and the bullet still hit very close to POA. When I hunt brush the 30-30 goes w/ me.

Good Luck!

Seafire, I went ahead with a 1-10 twist. Almost all of my rifles have a slightly faster twist. For me it has always worked and I have never put much stock in having a "optimal twist", never seen a difference and id rather it be slightly faster. This rifle WAS a 45-70, it was given to me for work done. Having a 450 ackley, I just dont care so much about the 45-70. 2 R#1 left, what to make?

Small Fry:

What exactly are you taking in school? Where I went to college we did not have the ability or capacity to make firearms. I think the school would have gone bonkers if anyone even had a firearm on campus.

I went to college in one of those states that started being communistic and full of yuppies before the term yuppies existed. I went to college about 9 miles or less from where Hillary Clinton went ( the bitch).

I'd sure like to hear more details about your number ones.

I myself have always had a soft spot for going retro. I would love to be the only guy for miles around with a number one in a 219 Zipper or a 219 Donaldson Wasp.

A bunch of wildcats based on the 30/30 case or the 30/40 Krag would be a one of a kind nowadays in a Number ONE.

The older I get, the more I get into varmint calibers. I don't have to wait for eternity for a season to show up. I hate deer hunting being so short, and it is 6 weeks here in Oregon.
Elk season is only a week.

I load all my rifles varmint hunting one round at a time anyway.
( bolt action guy).

Keep us posted on that baby when she gets to the range and out in the field.

Reloader,
If you want to upgrade that performance regardless of what side the tree the venison is on, upgrade to a 444 or a 45/70,.

I took a buck that field cleaned at 265 pounds in NO Minnesota with a 444 after it took down a couple of sapplings on the way in.

The sapplings caused the bullet to mushroom which I am sure was what took out about 10 pounds of hamburger on the shoulder.

I load 33 grains of RL15 with a 170 Hornady in my Win.94, gives you 2130 fps, 1.5" at 100 yd. with an old Foolproof peep sight.
