Pop--I know you love your Rum. The 30-378 will probably give you about 50fps more. And it will probably be alot more finicky about loads/accuracy. Maybe if you want to get a custom built with a 30" barrel you might find an advantage. Good luck with your decision.....

By the way....have you ever spent time over at longrangehunting.com? The guys over there are shooting guns called Allen mags......those look real interesting.

I had the Accumark and with reloads I got 3481fps with a 180gr bullet using 113gr/Retumbo. Alot more rifle than I need so I got a 300RUM and I'm 200fps slower even with the factory brake the 30-378Wby was hard on the shoulder.

My father and I both have 30/378 Accumarks, or atleast they used to be and they performed on par with what Tom Holland mentioned, 3400-3500 fps. with 180's. Back then we were using lots of H-50BMG. Accuracy was excellent. Definitely withing their guarantee. I got sick of the brake (blast, noise) after a couple of years and had it rebarreled with a #17 contour from Shilen in 338/378 back in '99. Put a couple thousand rounds through that one and just got it back with it's 2nd Shilen barrel installed 3 weeks ago.
If I had it all to do over again, I'd probably go with the RUM and not look back but the RUM wasn't around back then.

I had one for a while in an Accumark. The only reload I could get to shoot, besides the factory ammo, was with Lost River Ballistics 140gr. It clocked at around 3950 fps. I forgot the load, but Warren at Lost River would help you out with that. They have worked up the best loads for the Accumarks with there bullets.
The factory ammo shot consistantly around 5/8" groups at 100yds and the best I could do with the reloads, only the 140gr LRBs were about 1". Everything else I tried was 3"-4" @ 100yds. And those group sizes only lasted for about the first 600rds and the accuracy started to go and around 1000rds was shooting everything 2" plus.
My advise is to just shoot the factory stuff and don't bother trying to load for it, because by the time you find a load for it the barrel will be gone. I also had a 338/378 in the Accumark and sold them both. It is an amazing cartridge for long range hunting. But, the barrel life is so short that it isn't worth shooting at paper unless you can afford to rebarrel it every 600 rds or so. Also the muzzle blast was unbearable for hunting, when not using ear protection. I think I still have permanent ear damage from shooting it while hunting without ear protection. What?
Look in the Reloading Pages of this site, we have data developed in the 30378 Weatherby as well as the 300RUM and our own wildcat, the 30/404, and the A-Square 300 Pegasus.
If you already have a 300 ultra mag go to the 338/378. I'm shooting 210 TSXs at 3450. Work up loads with brake and cap it for hunting. Awsome round, its averageing 3/4". This is in a plain old synthetic with no bedding. Took two nice Mulies this year with devistating performance.Bought it just before the season, will bed it and use it for Elk/Moose next year, its a little more tha needed for Deer.
