grizz007my first big bore needs data
fellas, I've my first big bore....a .458 WM M98 ala J.C.Higgins 50
I gathered info here and there that some or many prefer to use AA2230 in the .458 so I bought 3 pounds and bought a box of Swift 400 A's along with 100 Remmy 405's for some practice. Plenty of 215's and Hornady brass that was on sale 3 months back or so.
This barrel was picked up here at the AR as a blank and now is 24" in length. Where can I expect to start with AA2230 with either bullets?
I've read reports of said powder with some serious velocity readings, makes me wonder where to start.
Appreciate the help.

SR4759Try an extruded powder of the appropriate burn rate. It will product much less flash and concussion.

Looking at the load data it seems that 2230 and 322 do a fair job but like so many of the other powders used with 400 grain bullets the powder is compressed in order to get top performance loads. Although I have no evidence of this it would seem that 1680 or 680 would be reasonable options. JMHO
