Forming 6.5 PPC brass

OK guys, I'm new at this so need your advice. My 6.5 PPC on the CZ 527 carbine should be finished in December. I will need to fireform two or three cases to send to Redding to have forming/reloading dies made. Can I neck up the 220 Russian to .243, then move the shoulder with a 6 mm PPC die, then neck up to .264, and fireform using the method discussed in the thread on fireforming without a bullet? If this won't work how do I do it? Appreciate your help.

Bob,

I think you're approach should work fine. I don't have any specs on the 220 russian or PPC to know what the differences are in the shoulders.

Thanks Paul, I've been corresponding with that guy who uses an AR type 6.5 PPC for competition since I posted this. He uses 6 mm PPC brass and necks up only. He says this eliminates neck turning. I've been looking at sites on the net and am suprised at how many outfits have Norma 6 mm and 22 PPC brass. So maybe the problem is not as big as I thought. Any other info appreciated.

Just use 6 PPC cases and fireform with cereal. Do this to form all your cases, not just the ones you send off to Redding.

In communicating with a few folks regarding the PPCs I just picked up on an interesting rumor. It seems that some company is thinking of building the AR15 in 6.5 PPC for competition. Supposedly this will happen in 2004 and 6.5 PPC brass will be available. Not holding my breath but a nice rumor.

Bob, I am not an expert on fireforming, at all, but since these cases are to be used for making dies, I would hesitate to use the cereal method.

I'd go with a fireform twice with regular bullets routine, just to be sure to get nice and sharp corners. JMO, Dutch.

Thanks Pete, I'm going to try both. Has anyone formed cases from 7.62 X 39?

Bob, I bought some from EABCO that were 7.62x39 WW cases formed to 6PPC. I understand it takes special forming dies to make the conversion work.

I am still trying to beat groups I shot with that brass with my current Lapua batch....... FWIW, Dutch.

Good Dutch, Another source. Does that EABCO have a web site? I've done a bunch of searches in the last two days and haven't seen that one. Did find one one that makes a centerfire conversion and brass for the 5 mm Remington. I can't imagine reloading for that one.

Who did the work on your rifle? I still have my CZ527 and would like to do the same thing, 6.5PPC. I posted a reply on 12-05-2001 to a question of yours on this subject but never did anything more about it. On the plus side I found a Ruger M77 MarkII in .35 Whelen at the local gun shop. But I would like to rebarrel the CZ527 to 6.5PPC before next deer season. Thanks Bob.

Dear Bob, I made 6mmPPC out of WW 7.62x39 cases because Fred @ Huntingtons said I couldn`t. I forget the progression I used but I started with 7BR dies and went from there to the 6PPC. They looked a little funny but shouldered up nicely to fit tight in my PPC, a Browning 78. I fireformed with bullseye and a cheap bullet. My neck is the .262 so I neckturned prior to fireforming. I have used these same cases in my 6.5PPC by using Bullseye and a cheap bullet again to blow the neck out to .264. Very accurate little XP100 based little rifle[6.5PPC] Good luck with your project.
Aloha, Mark[in Or]
