Hello all, new guy here and I need some info. Can you just necksize with a FL die and if so, what's the procedure? What are the advantages over FL sizing? I've been reading some of Ackley's work and he suggests that FL sizing does not shorten case life noticibly. Is their an accuracy advantage from one to the other? Thanks for any and all help. I've been cruising the site for the last few days and it sure looks like there are lots of knowlegeable folks on here and they seem very willing to share their info. Thanks again!!

Hello newby! There's 10 years of answers to questions just like yours here on AR. Click on "find" in the blue box above your post. Then insert the keywords in the 'search' function box. That should keep you busy for another few days.

Then, condense it into words that we can understand and come back with what you found. See how easy it is?

Hello Missouri Mule and welcome to AR Big Grin

1) No, you can not neck size (NS) with a full length (FL) sizing die. You need a pure neck sizing die(preferably with interchangeable bushings).

2) The advantages of NS over FL sizing is the case remains perfectly fitted to your indiviual chamber which is a plus from an accuracy standpoint and a negative from reliability standpoint in a dangerous game rifle.

3) Yes, NS has the accuracy advantage.

Sing out if you want or need additional input.

Good Shooting,

Yea, actually you can neck size with a full length sizing die. You just have to adjust the die so you don't resize the neck all the way to the shoulder. That is not, however, the way I prefer to do it since it doesn't size the entire neck.

I like Lee collet dies for neck sizing. No lube is needed with these dies and thus no mess. A dedicated neck sizing die from one of the other manufactures are fine as well. They're also fairly cheap as well.

Advantages to neck sizing are improved case life, less trimming and improved accuracy.

If you're resizing cases for a semiauto, pump or lever action gun, you'll probably have to full length size your cases.

+1, especially on the Lee Collet Neck Sizers.

Yes, you can neck size only about 3/4 of the neck by adjusting your die as follows: raise the ram with the shell holder installed, screw in your full length die until it hits the shell holder, lower the ram, unscrew the die back out about 3/4 of a turn, lock the lock nut. When you size it will size about 3/4ths of the neck and not size the case body.

However you will only be able to neck size about 3 or 4 times before your brass expands so much it becomes tight in your chamber and you will have to full length size or at least partial full length resize enough to set the shoulder back a smidgen.
