I just bought a bunch of once fired .300 Savage brass. Five of them had Browning headstamps.

Can anyone tell me who manufactured the brass?

I never knew Browning marketed ammo. Mostly just curious as I am just loading this mixed headstamp stuff with 100 or 110 gr.for plinking and practice and not accuracy loads.

Thanks, Merg

There are quite a few different cartridges with a BROWNING headstamp. I'm not sure who made it then, and now. Winchester?

I'd guess Norma as they have done quite a bit of private labeling especially for Weatherby.

Winchester made "frontier" for Hornady but to my knowlege didn't do much more private labeling.

According to Hogg, "The Cartridge Guide" (1982); "Manufactured for Browning Arms, Morgan, Utah, USA., by Amron Div. of Nasco International Corp., Waukesha, Wis., USA."

Ballistics tables for Browning ammunition were published in the 1974 "Sports Afield Gun Annual". Interestingly, the .300 Savage was listed as loaded with a 168 gr. "Soft Point Spitz." with a muzzle velocity of 2520 fps. Other cartridges were loaded with standard bullet weights with standard velocities for the time. These were as follows:

.22-250 Rem. 55 gr. SPS;

I have a few of the rifle rounds in my collection. Except for the .300 Savage, the soft point bullets appear to be identical to Winchester Power-Points of the same vintage.

All "Browning" branded ammunition I have ever seen appeared to be identical to Winchester-Western. It has always been my assumption that Browning's proprietary ammunition was manufactured by W-W, but it could have been made by a third-party contractor using W-W components.

I load .338 Winchester with both Browning and W-W brass. In all respects, they appear identical.

The Gold and Black Browning boxes were impressive.
