Nosler #6 manual - velocity question

I am working up a load for a new .308 Winchester. - I initially used 150 grain Hornady BTSP bullets with pretty good accuracy. I also want to try 150 grain Nosler ballistic tips. The difference in "book" velocity with the same powder charge (42 grains of Reloader 15) is pretty significant. The Hornady manual shows around 2500 FPS for the BTSP, while the Nosler manual shows close to 2800 FPS. The Nosler ballistic tip is a longer bullet & compresses the powder more - - could that account for the difference, or is the Nosler #6 manual just "agressive" in velocity projections? The Hornady manual and most "generic" loading info calls for 46 or more grains of RE 15 to get velocities of 2800 FPS with a 150 grain bullet.

I suspect that the Nosler manual could be a typo.

Typical upper end velocities for the 308 win using the appropriate burn rate powder for bullet weight are nominally as follows:

150 grn 2800
165 grn 2700
180 grn 2600

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Barrel length & test platform. What did Hornady use & what did Nosler use & what do you use? I have no problem getting close to 2800fps in a 24" target bbl. In a short 20" hunting rifle, you would have to push very hard to get 2700fps.

fredj - Hornady Manual- Win m70, 22" Barrel, 1-12 twist Federal 210 primer, 41.9 gr RE 15, 150/155 grain bullets - - 2500 FPS

Nosler Manual - Lija 24" Barrel, 1-10 twist, Federal 210M primer, 42 gr RE 15, 150/155 grain bullets - - 2728 FPS

Me - Rem 700SPS, 24" Barrel, 1-10" twist, Win WLR primer (I also have Federal 215, Remington & Winchester large rifle magnum primers), looking for 2700-2800 FPS.

I have deer hunted for years with a .308 & 150 grain factory Winchester power points - it's a very effective load for Tennessee whitetails. I've shot dozens & watched almost all of them fall. The factory ammo is advertised to have a muzzle velocity of 2820 FPS, so I'd like to find a good 150 grain load in the 2700-2800 FPS neighborhood.

Unless there is a dramatic difference between the book and my findings, I don't pay a lot of attention to the book velocity yields. Seldom is their receipe and mine exactly the same and seldom is their test platform and mine the same.

I've got a old, old Chrony that I've proofed using match grade .22 ammo and against some other high dollar chronies and it's close enough that I trust it.

In the cases you posted, the hand lapped custom barrel and the different length and twist could account for some of it.

I would suggest using the formula, tweek it around a bit to get the best accuracy from your rifle and don't worry about it. No way will it not be better than the store bought stuff you've been using. I read somewhere a fellow should never chrony his pet hunting load. Smiler

I think I see reason for the big difference, factory slophole vs custom precision chamber/throat.
As your working with another factory hole, and have no idea of how it compares to the one Hornyday, your results could fall anywhere between the 2 (or be even worse than Hornyday got).

In my -06, I have no problem matching Noslers and Sierras velocities, BUT my chamber is cut "test barrel" tight too.
