Yes these figures agree almost exactly. The 9600J would be the total energy available from combustion. 2/3's of the total energy is lost in heat friction etc. The 9j of 3200j would be a little less than 4/10's of 1%. Could you be a little more specific about your source?.....DJ

As little as it is, .4% still seems a bit much, but I won't argue with the math. Remembering that just like the equal-and-opposite nature of recoil as a function of the velocity and mass of the ejecta, a rifle torques about the axis of the barrel equal to the energy of the rotational spin that is imparted. How many of you have had a rifle "twisted" out of your hands upon firing?
