Just got my new 300 rum SF have put 93 rounds threw it already with 168 vlds and some 210vlds My Question to you fine gentlemen is, is 99Gr of Retumbo, 168gr VLD bergers going to hurt the average Barrel life of this gun it chronos right at 3300? by the way two coyotes have hated this gun. Anytime you funnel that much slow burning powder down a comparitively small bore, you're going to get excessive erosion. Look at your .300 RUM as a .300/404 Jeffrey Improved. It has greater capacity than a .300 Weatherby and only slightly less capacity than a .30-.378 Weatherby. I would suspect that accurate barrel life will be between 1000-1500 rounds. As long as you are willing to live with shorter barrel life, you'll have a blast (pardon the pun) with it. "I ask, sir, what is the Militia? It is the whole people. Thanks master, would you drop the fps down some? it still shoots good around 3000fps or should i burn a little quicker powder? sorry i am ignorant, I kind of like the 3300 fps ballistics for wind drift and so forth, Thanks what ould you suspect barrel life at 2900 fps? I always had good results with H4831 SC and 190-200 gr. Matchkings. I think an important factor in barrel life would be barrel temperature as well. Large quantities of slow powders generate a lot of heat which does not help barrel life. When I took my RUM to the range I made sure to bring another rifle or two to shoot while it was cooling down.

Bret1 - I don't think there is anyway that you can appreciably increase barrel life and get reasonable velocity without re-barreling to something like the .300WSM. In order to get 2900 fps out of that rifle and a 165-168 gr. bullet, you still have to use a large quantity of powder and it is as JMJ888 says, the temperature is one of the crucial factures to throat/barrel life as well as the sand-blasting effect of hundreds of flaming granules of powder at 5000+ degrees colliding with the surface of the barrel as they tumble down the bore. Each super-hot granule as it hits the bore, knocks little (read microscopic) pieces of barrel metal of the surface. This is what erodes the throat and continues on until you get as much as 4-5 inches of frosty looking throat with little evidence of rifling left. That .300RUM was made for top performance in a .30 cal bore with little regard for barrel life. It's like having a Ferrari or a Chevrolet, the Ferrrari should come with an Italian mechanic on retainer because that's how often you're going to be wrenching on it. The Chevrolet with minimal maintenance will last 200,000 miles. The Ferrari, however will do 200MPH and Chevvy will do 120, maybe. Most of us that own hotrods, live with the problem of shorter accuracy life and just by a new barrel every other year. Those who buy a .30-06 still hit what they're aiming at but may not get the thrill of hearing "Boom-Splat" in about 30 milleseconds. "I ask, sir, what is the Militia? It is the whole people. Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of the 300 RUM????? /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Winston Churchill
