I have a new Pac-Nor barrel (28" long, 1-8" twist, 1" contour, 3 groove).
Here is what I have to get started:

Bullets: 142gr Sierra's, 140gr A-max's, and 139 Lapua Scenars
Powder: H4831
Primers: WLR, WLRM, Federal GM210M's, and CCI 250 Large Rifle Magnum's
Brass: Lapua

I have done several searches and have gotten as much info as I could find but I have a few more spcific questions. I plan to do most shooting under 600 yards (mostly less than 400 yards).

I plan on starting with about 50grs of powder with the 142's and the GM210M's with the bullet just into the lands. After I get a decent load figured out I will change primers and look for improvements (hopefully). Next I will change bullets a go through the same process. Does this sound like a good plan? Any opinions are welcome! Does anyone use a Magnum primer with H4831? How about a Minimum/Maximum range for HH4831 and 142gr bullets? Thanks, Keith

P.S. I have received emails once before from some board members with good info. Unfortunatly, that was lost when my comp took a dump.

I think you might be looking at a very short life for that rifle with a starting load of 50.0 grains of H-4831 and a 142 bullet!

I personally use Federal 210Ms, they work great so I never had a reason to test any other primers. As for powder H4831 has given me a little more accuracy then I was getting with me H1000 loads, I am currently loading 51.5 grns of H4831 for a velocity of 3050 with the 142grn MKs out of my 28" barrel.

Ricciardelli, 3000fps isn't all that fast compared to any 300 mag, so why would it shorten my rifle barrel's lifespan? If I was shooting 107grn MatchKings the at 3500 fps, the story migh be a bit different.

I personally shot this at 1/2 MOA at 200 yards from the bench ( I might bit smaller then when I am practicing standing fire). I have also shot to the 1000 yard line with the exact same combo with god results so far, and according to the ballistics the bullet will be supersonic out to almost 1800 yards. So you could prolly try and shoot as far as that if you wished heheh.

Steve, I don't understand. All of the info that has been sent to me had a starting load of 50grs going up to 55grs in a few instances. I thought I was being somewhat conservative starting with 50. I noticed on your site under "the cartridges I have reloaded" that the 6.5-284 is not listed. Where did you get your "H-4831 From 35.9 grains to 45.9 grains" data? I am not challenging your experience just trying to understand. I have been reloading for about 18 years but am a definite newby to the 6.5-284 so I welcome all advise. Thanks, Keith

I wouldn't say my loads are to high, I have gone upto 55grns with a 142Sierra without any visual signs of high pressure. I wouldn't suggest that anyone else do it to their rifles, but it will work in mine.
Also keep in mind thier is quite a difference between my 28inch tube and a 24inch T/C barrel.

yeah the speeds should be higher from a 28 inch bbl than a 24.but the pressures should be about the same.your operating with 20% more powder than they recomend.
if there getting 2700 with 45 gr you should be at about 2900 with the same load.
i go a little over max sometimes,2 or 3 grains maybe in the real large cases, but 10 over in a case that only holds around 58 is asking for trouble.

How about the reloading data on this site for the 6.5-284. 51.0 to 55.5gr of H4831 for the 140gr MK. Are we to assume since it is above the Hornady manual that it is unsafe? What about all the data on this site?

Norma, who put in the specs for the 6.5-284 into CIP and SAAMI states 52.5grns of MRP for a 140grn Sierra for 3035fps.
Quickload states that I can load 59grns of IMR-7828 under a 140grn Hornady A-Max without exceeding the 60,000psi and 57grns of 7828 under a 155grn Sierra MK safely.

i dont know if saeed has pressure testing equipment or not.
i know a 270 with 140`s max out at about 2900.and it has a little more capacity and a larger bore.
as for 7828,it is way yonder slower than h-4350.and mrp is mighty close to rl-22 which is way yonder slower than h-4350.
i aint saying your loads wont work in your guns but they seem mighty hot from the data i have seen published in manuals that pressure test thier loads.
run your 55 gr h-4350 142 gr smk load across your quickload and see what you get.if its below 70,000 i will give up.
i know i have a 300 RUM and cant get within 5 grs of saeeds loads for it.
the same hornady manual lists the 264 win mag with the 140 a-max and imr -7828 at 62 grs. for 3000 fps.they give 3100 with 77 gr h-870.
