My 270 is a Remington 700 Mountain Rifle with a 22 inch barrel. This rifle seems to have a somewhat slow barrel, as I don't get the velocities from it that some people claim to get from their 270s. I've found that the best powder for top velocity in my rifle is IMR 4831 (not H 4831, which is slower). Using 59 grains of IMR 4831 -- a hot load that gives me poor case life -- I can sometimes get up to 3100 f.p.s. with 130 grain bullets. I usually use Sierra or Speer boattail 130 grain bullets. I've tried H or IMR 4350 powder in this rifle, and max loads of those powders give me loads that are about 200 f.p.s. slower, although they are very accurate. I use Winchester brass and Federal 210, CCI 200, or Winchester WLR primers. I load to an overall length of 3.35 inches, which is substantially longer than most loading books recommend, but which works in my rifle. You should be able to hover right around 3000 fps give or take 50 fps. The 270 is a very accurate cartride and loves many powders. The 4350's, 4831's, re 22 and re 19 are all good choices. If I had to make a guess I'd say buy a can of h4831. Good luck

My rifle is a Remington with a 22" barrel. My load is 130gr Nosler Partition over 55.0grs of IMR-4350(Max Load). It chronoed at 3,050 Avg for 3-shots. Shoots .8" at 100 yds. The GA whitetail I lunged with it this year at 40 yds had an exit hole you could stick two fingers in. I am an absolute fan of the .270 and will always be! I want about three more:-) Mike

Using 58gr H4831 w/Hornady 130SST I can get 3250+ out of my Browning 1885 w/28" barrel. But no deer will be able to tell if the bullet is moveing 3200fps or 2900fps. With 22" barrel 3100 is entirely posible, but don't worry to much about speed. Load for accuracy and be happy. Run just about any standard hunting bullet (hornady, sierra, rem, win) on top of some H4831, H4350, imr4350, imr4831, imr7828, AA3100, R19, 22.

I have a M700 ADL Synthetic with a 22" barrel I use H4831-SC for flat based bullets. With most 130gr bullets, I load a maximum of 60grs for a velocity of about 3000 fps. Hornady does list a load of 62grs of H4831-SC for their 130gr flat-based Spire Point bullet. That load clocked at 3150fps from my rifle. I use IMR-4350 for my boat-tail bullets. The most accurate load I use is 54GRs of IMR-4350 with the 140gr Hornady BTSP. This one clocks at 2900fps. Accuracy is very good. I also use the 135gr Sierra MatchKing bullet loaded with about 53GR of IMR-4350 for fun and to embarrass my friends. My rifle is most accurate when speeds are kept between 2900 and 3000fps. ZM

Hi, the data of Paul are very close to what I have found.RL22/MRP is the best powder for that cartridge-surprisingly even with light bullets. Markus

I use original surplus 4831, which has a burning speed closer to perhaps IMR 7828 or RL-22 than to the current crop of 4831's. My Sako has a 24.35" barrel and is quite fast. With 58.5 grains it gets 3200 fps with 130 grain bullets and doesn't want any more powder. In your 22 inch barrel, loads with H-4831, IMR 7828, or RL 22 should get you close to 3100 fps before pressures get beyond a comfortable level.

I have used the 270 a lot and have been partial to winchester 150 gr psp's for all hog and deer. For a reload I use 58.5 gr's of H4831 and CCI 250 primers. My favorite bullet is Speer's 150 flat based hot core. My rifle allows a long overall length and has a deep throat. Work up!

Thanks guys, you have confirmed what I thought. Looks like I will have to test a few powders when I get a .270. Thanks again Larry
