Which are the best micrometers for measuring case wall thickness? I am going to try some neck turning but would like opinions on the best way to measure wall thickness. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

look at Mitutoyo's Pin Mike....a very versatile tool that will do case walls nicely and other round surfaces. Shown here with one of several replaceable mandrels. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." So Vapo, on this tool you can change which of two tips, or both? _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

If you loosen the nut (A) and replace the mandrel (B) with a round pin of the size you want....(a 1/8" dowel pin for example) you can measure round walls easily and accurately. The micrometer spindle is not replaceable with other shapes....it's not needed for tubing and other irregular surfaces very often!! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Sinclair sells a really nice case neck mic mounted on a stand. A very handy tool for measuring case neck thickness.

In your area Wink, the best micrometers will be made by Etalon or the parent company Tesa. You will want a 0-25mm ball tip/ball end micrometer. As mentioned above by Vapo, these are best for measuring the wall thickness of tubing. I'll post a picture of the little Sinclair stand when I get home. It is over-priced, but works well. LD

lawndart, this will be one of those Christmas presents that Santa is going to offer me while I visit the USA. eddieharren mentioned Sinclair so I went to their web site and I think I see the unit on the little stand you mention. I think what I want is one that can do double duty, measure neck thickness but also be able to measure bullet diameters, etc. A unit which allows you to change the ball for a flat surface might be the best for me. If I understand the units presented it would seem that Mitutoyo makes one. Think this would be sold at the Dallas convention? _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.
