Well, it has finally settled in. Cabin Fever!! It has been one of the worst winters in over a decade and we just got another big storm yesterday.

Sooooo being as bored as I am I started looking around the house and found a Remington 700 action thats not being used (long action) What I would like to do is design a wildcat of my own design. Well, never having done this before I am open to Ideas. I hunt mostly Whitetails with the possibility of seeing a black bear during the hunt. I also like to hunt varmints. I'm kicking around the idea of a dual purpose rifle.

So if anyone has any ideas feel free to join in. For example any ideas on a parent case to use. Something to use a 6mm bullet maybe.

I'm open to any suggestions.

If you have a long action Rem 700 you have all kinds of choices. I'd look at a 6.5/284 with Noslers or Interlock bullets to anchor deer and black bear. It would really be a long range wind buster gun (V-Max type bullets) for the grass grizzlies too.
Recoil would be mild and with a 24-26" barrel, the fps would really kick butt. 6mm/06 would be OK but you get more bullet weight with the 6.5 mm.
One thing is that if you are going to the expense, get a real good barrel. I would suggest a fluted one to stiff'n and cool faster. Keep an eye on twist with what bullet weight you might be considering. One short cut and you defeat the hole purpose of what you are trying to achieve.

Check with the Clymer and Shilen websites. They probably have more experience with wildcats than anybody. Plus they are a wealth of info if you call and ask for advice.

If you just wanted to be a little different, and have a taste for nostalgia, then a .256 Newton would be fun. (.264" caliber) Of course, it's very similar to a 6.5mm-06 but .256 Newton just sounds better than 6.5mm-06. [Wink] Brass would be easy to make from '06 brass.
