What powder is "H. Universal"?

On page 565 of the Speer manual #13 (in the 240 grain table for the 44 Rem Mag) it lists a powder simply as "H. Universal".

I googled it and found nothing. So, if anyone knows, please let me know.

I'm guessing it means Universal Clays, but don't really know for sure.

sorry but all I can do is Guess as well.....Hodgdon's Universal.....but it sure is frustrating when one has to guess......and I just went to Hodgdon's website too if such a name existed....nix!

You might look at Hodgdon's loading data for your cartridge and see if they list a load with universal clays that matches the one from Speers manual.....
FWIW bluedot and IMR-800x are my powders of choice in the 44 mag

BTW...Hodgdon does list 10.2 grains of universal as a max load with 240 grain JHP in th .44 mag

In Speer it lists a max charge of 9.6 gr producing 1237 fps. Now, I'm not sure H. Universal it is Universal Clays after all.

Regardless of whatever Speer intended, if you are looking for a medium burn-rate powder for 44 mag., Hodgdon's Universal Clays is a top choice; just use Hodgdon's loading formula. Alliant's Unique and Power Pistol are both very similar candidates.

Test barrels, barrel length, environmental conditions, and primers can account for varying load recommendations. In the end, what works for you?

I'm not sure exactly how the powder is actually labelled in the USA but H. Universal is not the same as "Clays". It is part of rthe "Clays" series of powders and at some stage was called Universal Clays just to confuse things.
In order of burning rate, fastest to slowest;
1. Clays = ADI AS30
2. International, (sometimes referred to as International Clays) = ADI AS50
3. Universal (Clays) = ADI AS70

Universal/AS70 has approximately the same burning rate as Unique. Hope this has not confused you more.

Speer #14 no longer lists Universal for 240gr 44 mag loads.

Metallic Cartridge Reloading, 3rd edition lists 3 Hodgdon powders in their burning rate chart:

Hodgdon Clays
Hodgdon Int'l Clays
Hodgdon Univ. Clays

There is no listing of just "Universal." But my red arrows point to Hodgdon's wording, minus the 'clays.' I admit it is a bit confusing. My instincts would be to use what I have pictured as "H. Universal." BTW, that's a 1997 powder container.

This indeed is nothing like ADI AS 30.ADI doesn't manufacture AS30 it's Vectan a French made Powder

Hodgdon clays is manufactured by ADI in Australia & is AS30N.

Please be careful and " KNOW " what powders are what and who makes them .

Perhaps this helps answer your question .

*(In manuals or writings published before 1973, any mention of 4831 will refer to Hodgdon’s H4831. In older manuals, it was customary to list the powder simply as A4831†with no designation connecting it to the Hodgdon line. The reason for this is simple; prior to DuPont’s introduction of IMR 4831 in 1972, the surplus 4831 sold by Hodgdon was the only powder to carry this designation. Despite their similar nomenclature, these two powders (IMR 4831 and Hodgdon 4831) are not interchangeable and must not be confused. IMR 4831 is significantly faster burning than H4831, and may produce dangerous pressures if used with data developed for the latter.)
