I'm working some new loads, in some new brass, in a new rifle, with a new to me caliber. Setting up my FL sizer, I adjusted it to pretty much just size the neck after the first firing.

So far I haven't bumped the shoulder that I'm aware of... brass still chambers just fine...

Is this the proper starting point? Or should I perhaps back off a little until the brass "grows" a tad?

I adjust my FL sizers to size enough to just "touch" the shoulder or bump it 0.001-0.002" from its fired state. You will need a headspace tool like the Stoney Point/Hornady or something that can measure the base to shoulder length to do this. A sharpie colored shoulder can also help. You can see if the die is contacting the shoulder and scuffing the ink but you don`t have a way of knowing exactly how much it is moving the brass.
As long as the case chambers OK, and you are not pushing the shoulder back too far, you are doing OK IMHO though.

I pretty much do as Joe says but I rely on the Stoney Point "thingy" & don't mark my cases.

If, after you're set up as described, you will discover a slight space between your shell holder and bottom of the FL die, you measure this space with a feeler gauge and write the space down on the die box, you can set up the FL die in the future using the feeler gauge only.

It's a real time saver.

Thanks guys.

I'm guessing I probably need another firing or two on these new cases before I have to worry about bumping the shoulder.

I had looked at the Stoney Point gauge a few years ago, but dismissed it. Now, I getting to the point I feel it may be beneficial. I've looked at Midway a few times in the recent past and didn't find it. Do they carry it?

That's a good tip Vapodog, I have to remember that.

The Stoney Point tool is now marketed by Hornady.

That's also the best time to take the dimensions off the case for your headspace gauge. Also...be sure to drop the primer out for a good accurate reading.

Why didn't I think of that?
