Anyone using Reloder 17 in the 338/06 with 200 grain bullets? I've found loads using it with the 225 grain bullets but none with the 200 grain. Doug Humbarger NRA Life member Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club 72'73. Yankee Station Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

If you can't find data I would drop the 200gr charge 10 grains and workup to a reasonable load.

I started at 57gr and ran up to 60gr using RL17 and the 210gr scirocco in my 338-06ai. No pressure signs, good accuracy, my chrony bit the dust while I was working up those loads, so not sure on the velocities. Have 5lb of RL17 on my bench so eventually I will play with it some more. Got my initial info from Lagerboy here on the board. I suspect he will chime in eventually. Z

Thanks for the info to you both. I use r17 in my 284 and really like the results. One of the main reasons that I want to use it in my 338-06 is because it is in my Remington 7600 that I rebarreled using a Lothar Walther 1300 contour stainless steel barrel. I want to utilize r17 to lower the pressures a bit because the pump guns while strong enough do not have the camming/extraction power of bolt guns. If you don't get the velocity you expect from R-17, you might try R-15 and/or the new IMR 4166. The 338-06 and 338 RCM have slightly restricted capacity for their bore and benefit from powders slightly faster than the "4350" group. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

Mine excels with RL-15 & 200 grain bullets. I have a pretty good load with H414 as well, but that is as slow as I use for it. I have used both IMR 4350 and H4350, both slightly faster than RL-17, and was disappointed in their performance. 30+ years experience tells me that perfection hit at .264. Others are adequate but anything before or after is wishful thinking.

Hey Z. Humbarger I think RL-17, while being made with the short mags in mind, suits this cartridge just fine. You're right about the pressure being lower due to it's chemical makeup. There is an article on the 6mmPPC website I believe, about this powder. It's the reason I tried the powder. And after all, this cartridge is kinda like a short mag. When doing load development I took the 210gr Scirocco all the way up to 2910fps. Primers were starting to flatten then. The load I finally settled on was 62.0gr RL-17 with 210gr Scirocco having a col of 3.330. It chronys 2860fps with .7in groups if I do my part. This load is not a whole bunch different than the flat shooting 270 using 140gr bullets in terms bullet drop. Quite impressive. Keep in mind mind mine is the AI version. Good luck.

Re17 works well in the 338-06 and variants, but so does W760. See... http://forums.accuratereloadin...091032791#5091032791
