what do you guys use for light 44 mag rounds. I am using cci 350 primers and 6 grains of 231. Ive heard that mag primers can open up groups although these tend to shoot pretty good.

I usually use standard large primers (not mag). That said, I am trying some loads with CCI 350 (mag) primers and Blue Dot (Taffin loads).

I have used standard primers with Clays (not universal clays, or international clays, just Clays) and Trail Boss. Both shoot very nice groups with 6 gr in a 44 mag case and a 240 gr SWC.

I have considered H110 also, but have not because it's not really a target load.

thanks doug, what do you call a nice group? I just bought my first pistol and know very little about them. The load mentioned above put 5 of 6 shots into a 4 inch circle at 20 yds shooting offhand. Is this what to expect from an accurate load?

That's good. I'll put the target out to 20-25 yards sometimes but most of my shooting is 5-7 yards because if I have to shoot at 20 yards (60 feet) then I am going to have trouble justifiying fear for my life.

That's just me! I like to use the four 4 inch targets on one paper for my target shooting. Usually a 1-2 inch group with my 629's - a bit better with my Glock.

You certainly don't need the mag primers & as long as you aren't running that W231 load near max. you should be fine. BTW, you can never tell the accuracy potential of any load by shooting offhand. While 4"/20yd groups is not bad, a good 44mag is capable of that out to 75yds & farther in the hands of a very good shot. beer To test oyur laods for accuracy you need to be shooting from a steady bench rest of some kind. I use a padded 4x6, flat, w/ a shotbag on top. Extend your hands beyond the bag & support your wrists. thumb
