I am trying to work up a load for my 243 Win. using Reloader 22 and Berger 95 grain VLD bullets. Since there is not much information available on 95 grain bullets I decided to use 100 grain loads as a reference.
Different manuals list a max. load of RL 22 in varying amounts. For example:
manual #1 has 41.7 grains at 2950 fps from a 24" barrel
Manual #2 has 42.5 grains at 3020 fps from a 24" barrel
Manual #3 has 45.5 grains at 3076 fps from a 26" barrel
none of the material lists a specific bullet, so I am in the dark concerning how that changes the recipe.
My results for my rifle so far show:
41 grains of RL 22 gives 2755 fps with a 23 fps spread,
42 grains of RL 22 gives 2835 fps with a 9 fps spread,
for 10 shots with the chronograph set 12 ft. from the muzzle from a 26" barrel. No pressure signs, but the velocity spread seems to improve as the powder charge increases. I also tried magnum primers but the velocity spread increased a good bit so I went back to the Federal 210 match primers.
At this point I am undecided if I should load up some with 43 grains or just call things good right where they are. One thought is that since my velocity is a good bit below published velocities, my particular cannister of powder might be on the slow side and could safely be loaded to get 3000 fps with safe pressure levels.
