.22 Jet...finally got some ammo loaded...

I've had my 10" Contender barrel for over a year without firing a shot.

Today, with the stinky weather (too nasty to deer hunt) keeping me inside, I finally got a few rounds ready for the range.

I actually got a lot done. Got all my brass brass sized and even managed to end up with some range fodder to boot.

I ended up going with this load after several test shots: (max listed was 12.7grs)

40gr Jet (Hornady .222)
12gr H-110
New Remington Brass
CCI 400s
No crimp
OAL: 1.622

From the breach face to the nose of the bullet (when slid in to meet the beginning of the rifling) it measured 1.889

I wasn't able to eliminate the bullet's jump to the rifling, but did manage to push the OAL a bit past the 1.550 listed for this bullet.

I assume this is what I should be doing...minimizing the jump? I'd appreciate any feed back here as I'm new to bottleneck reloading.

Your loads will probably shoot well. Keep in mind that the Jet was designed for the S&W Model 53 revolver which had a .222 bore dia. The T/C barrels for all .22 centerfires including the Jet use a .224 more dia. The factory loads and the Hornady were designed for the S&W. You will probably get better accuracy in the T/C using .224 bullets of 35-45 gr. weight. Your .222 bullets will have a .001 extra room on each side in the T/C.

vonfatman: welcome to the forum. The Jet is a fun round. What do you plan to use it for? Sorry, but don't have any loading suggestions, my Jet is the old M53 S&W revolver (if shoots great but it is LOUD!). BTW, have you found a place to get brass. My supply is getting low. thanks

I am surprised at the 1.189" distance from rim to rifling. That .222 Hornady bullet is so short with the flat nose that there are limits to how far you can seat out and still have any bullet for the case to grab.

It's a "seasonal" brass...I have about 200 pieces which should last me a while. I have M53 but think the Contender will have to do for now as the .22 Jet cylinder is unused and I hate to shoot it while I have the Contender.

I was surprised too. You are correct, the bullet is so short...nothing to grab on to!

I used to have a S&W 22 Jet.

Speer used to make some .223 diameter bullets as well.

If the .222 do not shoot good you might give them a try.

However if the bbl is really .224 they are probably the best choice, just be sure and drop your load a little when going to the larger diameter bullet.
