does anyone have any experiences of using a 75gn game designated bullet as opposed to varmint.
would be looking to push it out at around 3600/3700fps so want something that will hold together.
not sure wether or not to go for a bt or fb
max range 350yds.
also which is the best brass to use?
have plenty of winchester/remington/federal.is there anything better quality?
many thanks
Griff

not real sure I understand question. 75gr is kinda light for deer size game, game bullets for varmints would be ok if you were trying to minimize pelt damage. Flat base versus boatail at your velocity is probably more a matter of preference, or if you seat your bullet long to reach the lands (flat base has a longer shank). Brass is something else, that depends on how picky you are. most (that I personally know) hunter/ plinker seem to favor Win brass. Fed brass semms to be more consistent but you hear complaints of it being soft. Serious shooter go for none of the above because by the time they got it sorted 1/2 is unusable. Lapua is the favorite around here,Norma make a good showing and Sako too. Don't know if this helps but there you have my 2 cents...

Hi Short243
Was thinking along the lines of if a 50gn 224 diameter can kill our roe deer quite adequately then surely a 75gn driven at a similar speed should do the job.perhaps I should be looking at b.c. rather than trying to shoot fast and flat.
thanks for the info on cases not sure wether lapua or norma do 2506 cases

I too thought that if a 50grn 22 could do it then so too could a 60grn 243. Take it from me it doesn't hold up. Even 80grn federal soft points (.243) cannot be expected to reliably penetrate roe. You end up with a fair number bounding off the regulation 50yards but with no hair or blood at the point of strike and so no indication as to whether you hit it or not - not good for confidence or finding deer.

If you want to go light for trajectory gains then to be sure you'd have to go Barnes X route, the gains are likely to be small over a standard 100grn bullet and wind sensitivity could come into it.

Hi 1894
have tried the barnes x 100gn but the gun didn't like them.
have been using 75gn v.max, shooting crows out to about 300/350yds the rifle absolutely loves the v.max shoots about .3 moa.
just thought that if I could get a bullet in the game category!! well you know what thought did!!!
are you stalking yet the ban seems to be lifted everywhere except were we are!
Griff.

Barnes-X is the only game bullet I'm aware of this light in .257.

Griff,

Wow, I can see why you might want to go for the light stuff - sounds fantastic accuracy.

re the Barnes, my mate who uses them had to really scrub his barrel to remove all copper. Also the nearest you should seat them to the lands is .050inches and most will want to be further away to be accurate.

You might be surprised how little difference it makes at 300 yards. I know when I was looking into a 25 06 as a 300yard roe rifle I worked out that the difference between an 85gr and a 100gr nosler ballistic tip was 1" at 300yards! (Maybe the 75gr makes more difference) I decided that if I was going to have to aim off a tad anyhow I might as well put another inch holdover in and be more certain of terminal performance. Then I realised my 6.5 was only 175fps short so I stuck to that which meant 1.5" extra holdover at 300yards. Then I realised I don't have anywhere to shoot roe at 300yards.... Like you say thinking is dangerous!

Yes I am stalking. First outing this am, so good to get back out again. Stalking ok here just can't sell the game!
