I just started reloading and shot my first loads. I use a Para Ordinance C 7.45 (.45) and loaded 185gr jhp. 95% of every shot jammed. If I only put in one round in the mag. and released the slide lock, it would fire. More than one round and it jammed. The slide would close about 95% and stop. I guy at the range shot my bullets in his Kimber and all fired well. My factory ammo. shoots well also. The reloads have a length of 1.185,a crimp of 4.68-4.71. Any suggestions?

It's tough to diagnose from a distance, but it sounds like your loads aren't developing enough power to send the slide back forcefully.

Is this a 'light' load?

I experienced the same problem with a P12.45. It would function well with ordinary GI FMJ ball ammo but nothing else. I finally fired some of a friend's handloads with an H&G 68 200 gr. LSWC bullet and they also functioned without fail. My [warped] opinion is that that particular pistol was "ramp sensitive"; even after substantial polishing. So I got the mold and now "roll my own". Good luck and...

Good shooting.

Robert

Buddyjay,
You do not specify what your load consists of.
I looked in the Speer Manual and they list a OAL of 1.200" for their 185gr JHP. Perhaps you might try seating your bullet out a little farther.

A quick check of the troubleshooting section of the "Ed Brown 1911 Bench Reference" came up with:

Worn out recoil spring, be sure your recoil spring matches the power of your ammo.

Bad Magazine or bad magazine components, try using your load with another magazine.

My less than expert opinion is, that if your gun worked with factory ammo, your handloads need to be adjusted to suit your gun.

I was lucky enough to find a new Kimber under the tree this year and E-mailed Sierra to ask for any tips they had on loading for the 45. The tech told me to keep the COL as long as possible with out hitting the rifleing and still fitting the mag. He claimed short ammo was a known cause of failure to feed problems. I just put my first 50 rds together with Nosler 185 JHPs at a COL of 1.25 but won`t know how they work until the morning, I`ll let you know how they go. I`d try increasing the lenght of your ammo though and seeing if it helps.

I loaded with 4.0 grains of Bullseye. Personally, it does seem that the bullet is low. I am going to try raising it to 1.20.

I looked in my Speer Manual and they recommend using 5.7 to 6.4grs of Bullseye with their 185gr JHP.
The Nosler Manual lists 4.4grs to 5.4grs of Bullseye for use with the Nosler 185gr JHP.
Maybe you are making your load a bit too light?

When my .45 wouldn't go all the way into battery I took a careful look at the brass. My powder die has an expander to slightly bell the cartridge mouth to aid in starting the bullets. I was seating the bullets to the correct OAL but the "crimp" was not tapered enough to allow the rounds to seat from the mag. They would seat however from slide lock. I had to adjust the die deeper into the press and back off the seater plug to get back the OAL. The additional, correct taper eliminated all of my problems. Good luck...

HEre's one for the books! I originally posted the jamming problems of my first reloads. The next day I took 100 rounds of different configurations; more powder, longer bullets, less powder, etc... I even took twenty rounds of the batch that jammed. Guess what! No jams! Not even on the rounds that jammed the day before. Can't figure this ine out.
