Has anyone tested R17 in 9.3x62? Any starting and max load data for 286 TSX would be appreciated.

The only case that Alliant shows with R17 that is close to a 9.3x62 is a 06 with 200gr in size and pressure. Going then to Hodgdon site the 06 W/200gr and same 51gr max. puts it with 760/H414-Hybrid 100V-H4350. IMR 4350 was slower takeing 53grs.

IMO it should be a fine powder for that task....good luck finding data on Aliant's website....they are the worst supplier of data for their products of anyone. If it wasn't for independent bullet makers testing their powders and supplying data, there'd be no reason to buy anything in the "RL-" line.... They have great powders....but don't seem to want anyone to know!

I emailed Alliant with the question. They were very nice with their response but alas it was not much help;
"Unfortunately we have no data for this cartridge. If I can find anything from an outside source, I will let you know. Thanks for your note and have a nice day."


I am currently loading 55.6 grains AR2208 (ie., Varget?) over 286 Gr TSX FB. and getting .68 MOA at 100 mtrs. on a 20+ km/h blustery day with a 22.72" hunting rifle. I arrived at this load after running an Optimum Charge Weight Development where the 55.6 gr. load was hitting the same point as each of the two loads above and below it, respectively, (see OCW technique at http://optimalchargeweight.embarqspace.com/)

Based on the accuracy of the RL17 in the 3006 (56.4 grains over 168Gr. Etip and .0275" jump)gives .5 MOA in 20+ km/h blustery wind I am thinking the RL17 should serve the old 9.3x62 with similar accuracy but improve the range I am getting witht the AR2208.

I think I'll have to wait for some more guesstimates unless someone wants to take this project on in the mean time.

then again the 9.3 kills so well at around 2400 fps why does one want to speed it up .................

To gain some range.....why confine oneself to 200 yards when the 9.3 X 62 has enough muscle to go twice that far and still deliver serious whoomp!

I asked the same question a while back and the answer was "RL-17 is close to 4350 in burning rate".

On the burn rate chart I have RL-17, #113 sits directly below Hogdons H4350 at the #112 spot and just above AA4350 at #114.

I plan on checking RL-17 out next spring with 286 gr Hornadys using H4350 load data to develop a load.

I totally agree! Now that I've settled on my load of Varget with the 250 Accubond going 2600 fps I plan on sending my VX3 1.75-6 off to Leupold Custom Shop to have them make up three CDS turrets; one for 500' elev for hunting on the Seward Peninsula of Alaska, one for 5500', my main shooting elevation here in Utah and the last for 10,500' where I hunt elk, again in Utah. Each will get me out to 500 yds.
