Care to share "universal" known combinations?

When I first started playing with the .416 Rem. Mag. I went ahead with my usual stubbornness of trying every published combo of components I had on hand. I belligerently ignored the MANY places I'd read to use RL-15 and to not bother with anything else. Finally I tried it and it was just the ticket for my rifle. The group size with every bullet was half of any other combo I'd tried. I don't remember such a breakthrough with any other cartridge.

My one experience doesn't mean anything statistically, but my point is I heard pretty consistently that RL-15 was the only way to go with the .416 Rem.

Here's the question I'm posing: Does anyone care to share other powders WELL KNOWN to be the obvious tried-and-true choice for a certain caliber? (Rather than just specific personal experiences, please stick to those powder recommendations you've gleaned from published sources by loaders who have used the powder in many guns.)

Other examples I can think of off-hand: Bullseye for target .38 Special wadcutter loads and H110/Win.296 for Magnum handgun rounds. Care to chip in any others?

This could be really helpful for new reloaders or people playing with a cartridge for the first time.

Thanks,
Kyler

Any of the 4350s in the .30-06 might qualify.

Also H-4831 in the .270 win could make that grade as well.

Hey Kyler!

I've liked the way the Lyman 47th manual states which powders should be favored for the particular caliber. It recommends bullets as well. It seems to be right on!

The Nosler manual always lists the most accurate powder tested as well.

Reloader 25 under whatever 250 grain bullet in the 338 RUM. 91 to 93 grains has worked in three different guns. Nosler lists it as the top load in their manual also.

Reloader 22 in the 338 Winmag under 225 or 250 grain bullets. Has worked in four different rifles.

And I really don't like Reloader 22 or 25. Wink

IMHO, we can easily eliminate powders that won't do well but it's impossible to make any certain predictions of what will work best from those that run in the proper burn rate.

I mean we don't need to try H-4831 in a .22 Hornet nor IMR 4227 in a .30-06. But any powder that gives 90-105% loading density in a case may very well work better than others in the same burn range.

Man I sure wished someone had listed something for the .280 rem. I've tried IMR 4350, 4831, Viht N165, RL19 and RL22 and haven't found anything that shoots as well as the factory loaded Fed vital shok 150 gr nosler partition load. I've loaded using fed cases (once fired) Fed 210, 210m, WLR and rem 9 1/2 under all the powders listed above from lowest to highest load from 2 different loading books (using Nos part 150 bullets) and the best I can get from any particular load in all the powders listed is to get two to touch and one is a flier. The factory ammo returns a consistent 3 shot tight cloverleaf group. Frustrating to say the least. This is through a Rifles Inc. Strata rem 700 action 22" barrel. I read recently that when using IMR4350 or slower burning powder, a Fed 215 is in order...anyone heard this? Or have input?

You might want to try another bullet in that .280. I got very good results using a 150gr CoreLokt bullet and H414. Also, H450 and the Hornady 154gr SP worked well. IMR4350 worked with just about every bullet I tried.
I don't shoot red line loads but my loads were kinda top end.

Aim for the exit hole
